Dyer County pulls away from Lady Trojans for big district win

Dyer County scored early but the Lady Trojans were able to answer only to have the Choctaws pull away with 11 runs in the final two innings to take a 16-2 win over Dyersburg in District 13-3A softball action on Friday evening at Doug French Field in Dyersburg.

The Choctaws got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Kierstyn Ray singled to lead off the game then scored on an Emma Wray single to put the orange and white on the board. Pitcher Rylee Key then singled Wray in to put Dyer County on top 2-0 after a half inning.

Dyersburg looked poised to answer with a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning. Lily Kate Jones singled then Avery Hicks followed with a single. A walk to Izzie Odom loaded the bases before a strikeout ended the frame and the Dyersburg threat.

The next two innings went quickly and fairly quietly as the Lady Trojans worked around a one-out double from Katie Beth Caldwell in the third then Dyer County allowed Chelby Jordan to reach on a leadoff error in the bottom of the frame before getting the next three out to send the game into the fourth inning.

Dyer County was able to put together a two-out rally in the top of the fourth. Kennedy Hill drew a walk then Allie Ables singled. Abbie Gibbons made sure the Choctaw rally prevailed as she sent the first pitch of her at bat over the left field fence for a three-run homer. Kierstyn Ray followed with a single before the inning came to an end on a pop out with Dyer County taking a 5-0 lead after three and a half innings.

The Lady Trojans were able to get onto the board in the bottom of the fourth thanks to three Dyer County miscues in the field. Addie Gatlin and Mallory McCaslin reached on errors before a groundout pushed the first Dyersburg run across. Bella Turnage drew a walk then Jordan reached on an error which scored another run for the Lady Trojans and cut the Dyer County lead to 5-2 after four innings.


Dyer County began to pull away in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a leadoff single from Natalie Armstrong. A sacrifice bunt from Hill moved her to second then Ables doubled her in. Gibbons followed with a one-run double. A single from Ray and a Caldwell walk loaded the bases before Wray drew a free pass to score a run. Key flied out to right to score a run before a pop out ended the top of the sixth with Dyer County leading 9-2.

The Choctaws were able to get out of the sixth after a McCaslin reached on an error then Kyleigh Littles singled to send the game into the seventh.

Dyer County put the game away in the seventh. Armstrong singled then Ables reached on a fielder’s choice which didn’t result in an out. Gibbons got her third hit of the night to score a run – this time an RBI single. Ables’ courtesy runner, Emma Moore, scored on a passed ball before a Ray sacrifice fly plated another run. Caldwell and Wray each singled then scored on a Key double to put Dyer County up by 12. Molly Kate Woody then homered to left to put the Choctaws on top 16-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh.


The Choctaws then retired the Lady Trojans with two ground outs and a flyball to center to seal the win for Dyer County.

Gibbons was a triple away from the cycle, going 3-for-4 with five RBI to lead the Choctaws at the plate. Ray and Wray each had a trio of singles while Ables, Caldwell and Key had a double and a single. Armstrong also had a pair of singles in the win.

The Lady Trojans had singles from Jones, Hicks and Littles in the loss.

Key took the win in the circle, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. Woody pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing just one hit as the junior and freshman combined for the three-hitter.

Gatlin took the loss in the circle for Dyersburg, allowing 12 runs on 14 hits with five strikeouts.

Dyer County returns to action on Monday when the Lady Choctaws host Arlington at 6:15 p.m. The Lady Trojans will also be in action on Monday, traveling to Covington at 6:30 p.m.
