Dyer County tops Tipton-Rosemark with walk-off

With the District 13-3A Tournament beginning on Thursday on the Choctaws’ homefield, Dyer County’s softball team got one last regular season workout in as the orange and white defeated Tipton-Rosemark Academy, 6-5, on Monday in walkoff fashion.

The Lady Rebels got on the board first with a run in the first inning as the two teams began what turned into a matching game of scoring.

Dyer County answered the TRA run in the bottom of the first with one of its own. Kierstyn Ray and Evie Rogers each reached on separate errors then a Rylee Key groundout tied the game at 1-1 after one inning.

Neither team was able to string its offense together again until the top of the sixth inning. Howe singled to lead off the Lady Rebel half of the frame then Sykes singled her in. Willis followed with an RBI double then Ursery did the same to give the Lady Rebels a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

The Choctaws had an answer in their half of the frame. With one out and a runner on first, Emma Wray reached on an error then Katie Beth Caldwell singled. Molly Kate Woody reached on an error which allowed both of her teammates to score then a Natalie Armstrong RBI single tied the game at 4-4 after six innings.

But, Tipton-Rosemark answered with back-to-back doubles from Thorpe and Howe to lead off the seventh to give the Lady Rebels a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Dyer County’s offense went to work to get the win. Ray singled and Rogers walked then Wray was intentionally walked two batters later to load the bases. Caldwell then ended the contest with a two-run, game-winning double to give her team the win.

Caldwell had a double and a single with a pair of RBI while Ray had two singles in the win.

Woody picked up the win in relief, allowing four runs on six hits with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.

The Lady Choctaws will head into the District 13-3A Tournament as the top seed and will play the winner of Thursday night’s opening round matchup between Dyersburg and Obion County Central (scheduled for 5 p.m.) at 7 p.m. on Thursday night in Newbern.
