When referring to the Dyersburg State baseball field, there have been different things to call it over the years, including, most recently, “the turf at Dyersburg State”.

After Saturday afternoon at the DSCC diamond, there is a name which will be what players and fans alike can call it formally as Dyersburg State held a field dedication ceremony as the baseball field was christened Jeff Agee Field in honor of the former DSCC baseball player and current Chairman and CEO of First Citizens National Bank.

“This just brings back some great memories,” Agee said of coming to the baseball field where he played and seeing the signage reading “Jeff Agee Field”. “I love this place. It was very impactful for me.

“Not only from an athletic standpoint but it was very impactful from a career judgement and career direction. The teachers here were just awesome.”

Agee was a pitcher for the Dyersburg State baseball team from 1979-1981 and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1981.

“It’s really hard to even put into words what he has done for us,” Dyersburg State President Dr. Scott Cook said of what Agee has meant to the school. “He has been a perpetual friend and supporter of the college.

“It started in 1979 when he started playing for the then Dyersburg State Community College Chiefs. He has been a fixture on our campus ever since. He is a long-standing member of our foundation board helping us to raise money throughout the years. He’s also chaired that body for a number of years. Jeff Agee is a very, very good friend of the college and, I would truly say, a Dyersburg State legend for his work on and off the field.”

Agee stressed that while the baseball team allowed him to get more education free after being given a full scholarship, the teachers he learned under made big difference in his life. It set a good foundation for him.

“It’s a big foundation for Dyer County,” Agee said. “It just makes a big difference in all of West Tennessee.

“It impacts quite a few counties. The economic development is just awesome. It improves the lives of the young people that attend here.”

Agee pointed out the vision of Dyersburg State Community College is to transform their students, improve their learning and become better citizens.

The new namesake of the field shared some of his favorite memories on the diamond at Dyersburg State, where the Eagles were, during his career, the Chiefs.

“I pitched more than I played shortstop,” Agee explained. “So, my favorite memories were really when I felt good – when the weather was good, the ball was moving off my hands good and I was pitching good.

“And striking out batters and trying to get a shutout.”

Agee is still quite a baseball fan and can be seen through the season attending games at different levels. As a fan, Agee said words couldn’t hardly explain how it felt to him for there to be a “Jeff Agee Field”.

“I personally feel like this one of the most impactful recognitions that I have received,” Agee explained. “People that know me knows I love banking and I love finance.

“But, this is one of the most impactful recognitions that I have ever received. Ever.”

The Eagles fell 4-3 to Pellissippi State on Saturday.
