Junior trio goes deep in Dyer County win over Crockett
In the first of several makeup dates on the docket for the Choctaw softball team, Dyer County kept its perfect record in District 13-3A thanks home runs from the team’s junior class, which helped the orange and white take a 9-1 win over Crockett County on Wednesday in Newbern.
The Choctaws got on the board early, scoring a trifecta of runs
in the bottom of the first inning. Kierstyn Ray singled to lead off the frame
then Rylee Key singled to put two on with one out. Allie Ables flew out to
center but the play scored a run making it a sacrifice fly to put Dyer County
on the board. The orange and white added to its lead when the next batter, Emma
Wray, homered to center to put Dyer County on top 3-0 after one inning.
Dyer County added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth
inning after being unable to cash in on opportunities in the second and third
innings. With one out and a 2-2 count, Kennedy Hill homered to right to extend
the Choctaws’ lead to 4-0 after four innings.
The Lady Cavaliers looked to get back into the game in the top
of the fifth, getting a walk and a single from Carter which led to an RBI single
from Thornton to cut the Dyer County lead to 4-1 after four and a half innings.
Dyer County got that run back and then some in the bottom of
the fifth. Katie Beth Caldwell drew a walk then Key sent the first pitch she
saw over the centerfield fence for a two-run homer. The shot extended the
Choctaws’ lead to 6-1 after five frames.
Though that was the end of the Dyer County homering, the Choctaws
still continued to tack on runs. Evie Rogers led off the bottom of the sixth
with a single then Abbie Gibbons walked. After a fielder’s choice, Caldwell
doubled in two to push the Dyer County lead to seven runs. A Key groundout
resulted in another run for the orange and white as the Choctaws took a 9-1
lead into the seventh inning.
In the seventh, Molly Kate Woody and the Dyer County defense
worked through a 1-2-3 inning with the freshman striking out two of the final three
batters to seal the win.
Rogers had a trio of singles to lead the way at the plate
for Dyer County. Key homered and singled in the win.
Key picked up the win for the Choctaws, allowing four hits while
striking out four in four innings of shutout ball. Woody allowed just one run
on two hits with three strikeouts in three innings.
Dyer County returns to action on Thursday when the Choctaws
travel to Troy to take on Obion County Central at 5 p.m.
