Trojan rally falls short at South Gibson
A night after getting defeated by a dozen and held to just two hits in the opening game of the home-and-home series with South Gibson, the Trojans looked to pick up a win on the Hornets home field but came up just short, falling 6-5 on Tuesday.
South Gibson looked poised to repeat their performance from Monday
night on Tuesday as the Hornets scored three times in the bottom of the first
inning to take a 3-0 lead.
Dyersburg got on the board for the first time in the series
in the top of the third frame. Evan Thompson was hit by a pitch with one out then
scored later in the inning on an Alex Page single to cut the South Gibson lead
to 3-1 after the top of the third inning.
The Trojans pulled even two innings later as Ty Seaton led
off with a single then Logan Cohen reached on a sacrifice bunt. Thompson then
doubled in two runs to tie the game at 3-3. Thompson scored later in the inning
as Page doubled him in to put the Trojans on top 4-3 heading into the bottom of
the fifth.
South Gibson answered with a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly
by Cade Allen and a passed ball to take a 5-4 lead after five frames.
The Hornets picked up what turned out to be an important
insurance run on a double from Beasley to go up 6-4 heading into the seventh
inning.
Dyersburg had one last rally in the Trojan bats as Cohen drew
a walk then Ryan Wesson singled two batters later. Page grounded into a fielder’s
choice to score a run and cut the South Gibson lead to one before a ground out
ended the game for the South Gibson win.
Page led the way for the Trojans with a double and a single
while Wesson added a pair of singles in the loss.
Dyersburg returns to the field on Thursday when the Trojans
travel to Bethel University to take on Milan at 6 p.m.
