When 100 minutes wasn’t enough to settle things between the
Trojans and visiting Obion County Central, Thursday night’s District 13AA soccer
match at J.C. Sawyers Stadium went to penalty kicks where Dyersburg hit all
five of theirs to secure the 3-2 win over the Rebels.
The Rebels got on the board first, getting a Diego Ocho-Avila
goal in the 15th minute to take a 1-0 lead nearing the midway point
of the first half.
Dyersburg was able to answer within the next ten minutes. A Jackson Duggan goal in the 24th minute tied the game at a goal apiece.
The Trojans got on the board again four minutes later to
take their only lead in regulation. Elian Gonzalez banged home a goal in the 28th
minute to give Dyersburg a 2-1 lead, which it held through the rest of the half.
Dyersburg’s lead was maintained through over half of the
second half as well. But, Diego Ocho-Avila was able to pull the Rebels even
with a goal in the 67th minute to tie the game at 2-2.
Though both sides had their opportunities, the game remained
tied through the rest of regulation.
With both teams having shots at scoring in both the first
and second 10-minute halves of overtime, the game remained tied and headed
into penalty kicks.
Dyersburg kicked first as Isaiah Williams found the net
while Rodrigo Aguilera-Juarez’s kick sailed wide. The Trojans went up 2-0 in
the penalty kick phase as Adrian Tellez Sanchez kicked home a goal before an
Abram Frost goal for the Rebels cut the Dyersburg lead in half. The black and
gold added another goal this time from the foot of Duggan which was answered by
an Aguilera-Juarez goal to keep the Rebels within one. Grant Sullivan kept the Trojans
perfect in the penalty kick phase and Rebel Angel Acevedo banged home on to
keep Central in it.
The Trojans were able to seal the win with a Gonzalez penalty kick to give Dyersburg the point from penalty kicks and the win.
Dyersburg is scheduled to take part in the Dyer County High
School Tournament this weekend and returns to action at home on Tuesday when
the Trojans host Peabody at 6 p.m.
