The Choctaws, coming off a 3-0 win in the consolation bracket
final, looked to force a second District 13-3A Championship Game between
themselves in the Lady Hornets but fell 14-4 on Tuesday night as South Gibson
took the winner’s plaque.
South Gibson struck big in the top of the second inning. Jade Reed had an RBI double then Hall singled in a run. Three batters later, Brooklyn Davidson singled in two runs before Scott reached on an error to score two more and give the Lady Hornets a 6-0 lead after an inning and a half.
Dyer County struck back in its half of the second inning to
cut into the Lady Hornet lead. Evie Rogers reached on an error the Molly Kate
Woody singled. Three batters later, Abbie Gibbons doubled in two runs to cut
the South Gibson lead to 6-2 after two innings.
With two on and one out in the top of the third, the Lady
Hornets got those two runs back when Hall reached on an error to score two and put
South Gibson up 8-2 heading into the bottom of the third.
The Choctaws picked up a run in the bottom of the frame as Katie
Beth Caldwell sent the third pitch of the frame over the left field fence to cut
South Gibson’s lead to 8-3 after three innings.
But, after a scoreless fourth inning, the South Gibson offense came to life again, scoring six times to take a 14-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Dyer County looked to stave off the mercy rule and was able
to get a two-out, solo homer from Caldwell – her second of the game – and a
Rylee Key double before a strikeout ended the game and South Gibson clinched
the championship.
Caldwell’s two homers led the way at the plate for the
Choctaws while Key added a double and a single in the loss.
The Choctaws advance to the Region 7-3A Tournament next week
when Dyer County will travel to Haywood for the semifinal round on Monday. Time
to be announced.
