Dyer County bounced back from its loss to South Gibson on
Saturday as it had a two-day rest before facing Crockett County and shutting
out the Lady Cavaliers 3-0 on Tuesday in the District 13-3A Consolation Bracket
Final at Dyer County High School.
After a scoreless first inning, Crockett County threatened with a Smith sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third with two out. Dyer County was able to get the next batter to pop out and get out of the jam with the score still tied at 0-0.
The Choctaw offense rewarded its defense almost instantly as
Emma Wray sent a 1-2 pitch over the centerfield fence to lead off the bottom of
the second for a solo home run to give Dyer County a 1-0 lead after two
innings.
The Lady Cavaliers looked to get on the board themselves
with two out in the top of the third. A double from Piper White was followed by
a long fly to center from Thornton. But, Choctaw centerfielder Kierstyn Ray
made the catch, robbing Thornton on the warning track of a home run for the third
out to keep the Choctaws ahead by a run.
In the bottom of the frame, Dyer County’s offense again
thank the defense with some run production. Abbie Gibbons singled then Katie Beth
Caldwell singled with two outs. Moments later, Gibbons scored on a catcher’s
error then Caldwell scored home ahead of a throw on Rylee Key’s groundout to put
Dyer County on top 3-0 after three innings.
From there, runs just didn’t get pushed across. Dyer County freshman pitcher Molly Kate Woody and the defense retired nine of ten batters over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, allowing only a two-out walk in the sixth. During this time, Dyer County only got a double from Caldwell in the way of hits as the game went to the seventh with the Choctaws still on top 3-0.
In the final half inning, the Choctaw defense got a pair of
pop outs and a ground out to win the game and secure Dyer County’s spot in the district
