Dyer County got its defense of last year’s District 13-3A Championship off to a positive start on Thursday night, but it wasn’t easy as the Choctaws were only able to scratch across three runs against Dyersburg in three separate innings on the way to a 3-1 win over the Trojans in the tournament quarterfinals.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Dyer County got on the
board to break up the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning. Trey Starnes
was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame then Jack Smith singled him in after he
advanced to second on a passed ball to give the Choctaws a 1-0 lead after three
innings.
Dyer County looked to add to its lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Landon Daniels and Weston Sims walked to lead off the inning then Everett
Kuykendall singled to load the bases. Starnes followed with a sacrifice fly to
plate a run and put the Choctaws up 2-0 following the fourth inning.
Dyersburg was able to get one of those runs back in the top
of the fifth inning. With two outs, Ryan Wesson walked then Alex Page continued
to aid the Trojan offense, singling in a run to cut the Dyer County lead to 2-1
heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Dyer County’s answer was quick and exact as the Choctaws also scratched across a run with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Daniels reached on an error then Sims and Kuykendall drew walks to chase Trojan starter JP Noblin from the game. Starnes singled in another run to put the Choctaws on top 3-1 after five frames.
Dyer County’s defense worked around a one-out walk by Aiden
Chandler to get out of the sixth then Dyersburg gave up singles to Nick
Epperson and Koleman Pride before getting out of the frame to send the contest
into the seventh.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Trojans looked
to be getting into business with a Page single then Will Leonard advanced to
first on a dropped third strike. But, after a Noblin singled to load the bases
with Page’s courtesy runner, John Hassell, and Leonard, Dyer County ran a successful
pick-off play at third to end the game and seal the win.
Dyer County recorded eight hits among eight different players, with Talon Messer’s double being the only one for extra bases.
Page had a pair of singles to account for two of Dyersburg’s four hits.
Jack Smith picked up the win, allowing one run on four hits
with six strikeouts in seven innings of work. Noblin took the loss, allowing
three runs on eight hits with a trio of strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
Dyer County returns to action on Friday when the Choctaws face
South Gibson in the winner’s bracket semifinals at 7 p.m. Dyersburg will take
on the winner of Friday’s game between Obion County Central and Crockett County
at noon on Saturday.
