After splitting in the regular season by winning on each other’s home field, South Gibson got a measure of revenge over the Choctaw softball team on Saturday evening, defeating Dyer County in the semifinals of the winner’s bracket of the District 13-3A Tournament in Newbern.

Much like the Lady Hornets had done during their visit to Newbern earlier in the season, South Gibson got on the board early with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run single from Brooklynn Davidson to give South Gibson a 2-0 lead after one half inning.

Dyer County was retired in order in the bottom of the first and limited to a two-out double from Evie Rogers in the second as well as a two-out Kierstyn Ray single in the third. The Choctaw defense kept the Lady Hornet offense in check in the second and third innings to stay trailing 2-0 after three innings.

With one out in the top of the third, two errors and a walk led to a bases-loaded situation for the Dyer County defense. Freshman pitcher Molly Kate Woody was able to strike out the next batter but Ballentine sent a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for a grand slam to extend the South Gibson lead to six. Davidson followed with a single then Scott homered to center to give the Lady Hornets an 8-0 lead after three and a half innings.

Dyer County struck back to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the frame. Rylee Key sent a 1-1 pitch over the centerfield fence to put the Choctaws on the board. With two outs and two batters later, Rogers singled and Natalie Armstrong drew a walk before a strikeout ended the threat with the orange and white still trailing 8-1 after four frames.

After working around a leadoff Flowers double in the fifth and getting through South Gibson in order in the sixth, Dyer County picked up another run in the bottom of the sixth. Wray drew a one-out walk then scored on Rogers’ triple two batters later to cut the South Gibson lead to 8-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning.

South Gibson added a run in the seventh when Scott tripled then scored on a Whittemore fly out to extend the Lady Hornet lead back to 9-2 heading into the bottom of the frame.

The Lady Hornets then only surrendered a two-out way by Ray before sealing the win with a strikeout to advance to the District 13-3A Tournament Championship Game.

Rogers had three of the Choctaws’ five hits, going 3-for-3 with a triple, double and a single with one RBI in the loss.

Dyer County awaits the winner of Monday night’s game between Dyersburg and Crockett County in the consolation round. That game will be played on Monday at 5 p.m. The Choctaws will play the winner of that game at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and the winner of that will take on South Gibson in the district championship game at 7 p.m.
