Three Oaks clinches spot in title game with blowout win

The Three Oaks Choctaws are one win away from both an undefeated season as well as the school’s first-ever TMSAA Class A State Championship after the orange and white dominated the final five innings of their 15-3 semifinal win over Providence Academy on Thursday afternoon in Clarksville.

Providence took the lead early with a pair of runs in the first inning and held that two-run lead until the top of the third.

In the third time to the plate for the Choctaws, Three Oaks cut the Viking lead in half. Talon Harrell reached on an error then Nate Vick singled him in to cut the Providence Academy lead to 2-1 after two and a half innings.

The Choctaws continued to chip away at the lead in the top of the fourth as Cullen Messer drew a one-out walk then Braxton Anderson was given an intentional pass after Messer stole second. Messer scored moments later to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

The Three Oaks offense came to life in the top of the fifth as Corbyn Kolwyck drew a leadoff walk and Harrell singled. Vick’s single scored two runs to give the Choctaws the lead then the orange and white added even more runs with two outs. Anderson had a two-out double to score two while Grayson Daniels followed with an RBI single to put Three Oaks on top 7-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Providence was able to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth but Three Oaks ended any doubt of the result in the top of the seventh.

Four straight singles from Messer, Anderson, Daniels, and Crawford Childress opened the inning and led to two runs. Kolwyck grounded out for the first out but a run scored in the process to push the Three Oaks lead to seven. Harrell singled in a run while Vick and Landon Todd got on via a single and an error, respectively. Maddox Davis grounded to third for the second out which also scored a run and Messer followed with a two-run single to extend the inning and the lead. Anderson doubled in a run to push the Choctaw advantage to 15-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

In the final half inning, Messer and the Three Oaks defense got through the frame with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to punch their ticket to Friday morning’s TMSAA Class A State Championship game with the 12-run win.

Anderson had two doubles and a single to lead the way for the Choctaws at the plate while Vick had three singles as well. Messer, Daniels, Childress and Harrell each had two singles in the win.

Davis picked up the win on the mound, allowing one hit while shutting out the Vikings for five innings and striking out five.

Three Oaks will play for the TMSAA Class A State Championship on Friday morning at 10 a.m, and will face Lincoln County Middle School for the title.
