Three Oaks march towards the TMSAA Class A State Tournament
next week in Clarksville took its most important step on Thursday in Jackson as
the Choctaws took a 10-0 win over Martin to claim the TMSAA Class A Section 4
Tournament Championship in five innings to punch the orange and white’s ticket
to state for next week.
After a scoreless first inning, Three Oaks got on the board
with one out in the top of the second. Crawford Childress hit what looked to be
a home run to centerfield but umpires ruled the hit a ground-rule double,
stating the ball went under the fence. Regardless, Childress didn’t have to
wait long to cross the plate as Corbyn Kolwyck singled him in to put the Choctaws
on the board. Talon Harrell singled then Nate Vick helped his own cause with a
sacrifice fly to plate Kolwyck. Landon Todd added an RBI double to put Three Oaks
on top 3-0 after an inning and a half.
Three Oaks Head Coach Hayden Campbell agreed this inning set
the tone.
“It’s really important with a team as good as Martin Middle
School to come out and stroke the baseball as good as we did,” Campbell
explained. “We came out and we let them know exactly what we wanted them to do.
“The beautiful thing was is that we executed to perfection.”
Two innings later, the Choctaws broke the game open – again with
one out in the frame. IN the top of the fourth, Todd drew a one-out walk then Maddox
Davis reached on an error as did Cullen Messer. With the bases loaded, Braxton
Anderson was hit by a pitch to push across a run then Grayson Daniels singled
in two more. Childress drew a walk to load the bases again before a two-out
single from Harrell drove in two runs before the final out to put the Choctaws
in command 8-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.
Back-to-back singles from Vick and Todd led off the top of the fifth, A Davis sacrifice fly plated a run as did another from Messer to put the Choctaws ahead 10-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Three Oaks’ defense then worked around a leadoff single and
a two-out walk to get a flyout to seal the mercy-rule win and send the team to
state.
Childress and Todd each had a double and a single in the win
while Harrell had a pair of singles.
Vick picked up the win on the mound, shutting out Martin for
four innings, allowing four hits while striking out four. Messer pitched the
scoreless fifth.
“Nate Vick is Nate Vick – there’s no other way to put it,”
Campbell said. "He’s a kid that can come out and absolutely deal. I’m so proud
of him for doing that tonight.”
The Choctaws, now 23-0, advance to the TMSAA Class A State Tournament which begins on Thursday, May 15 in Clarksville.
When asked if he had anything to add to his earlier
comments, Campbell’s response was just four words - “Let’s go win state.”
