Basketball players from around the community from the past –
and some from the present – will come together on Saturday night for a worthwhile
cause as former Dyer County and University of Tennessee standout Robert Hubbs,
III, presents the R3 Charity Basketball Game with all the proceeds going to Nolan
Grills and his family.
“We wanted to do something special to the community and for
the Grills family,” Hubbs said. “We all know about the situation.
“Me and Hanna Box came up with the idea to help make it
easier on them. That way, they’re not struggling or trying to grit and grind
for anything that they don’t have to. Especially in this situation.”
Nolan Grills, a 9-year-old young man from Newbern, TN is currently receiving treatments at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis for Peripheral T Cell Lymphoma (PTCL). Nolan has been blessed so far with great news, and the treatments are working. Profits from this event will be given directly to Nolan and his parents.
Nolan’s parents are Andy and Jennifer Grills. His grandparents are Perry and Patricia Grills, Susan Townson, and the late David
Townson.
“We just want to do something special and also have a little
fun as well,” Hubbs added.
The former Choctaw and Volunteer star praised Box for her
help in getting this event put together.
“She helped out a lot,” Hubbs said. “She did the majority of
the setting up this time.
“She’s been coaching at Dyersburg State and has kept the
contacts with all the former Choctaws and Trojans as well. This helped me out
and helped the event out as well to make sure we’ve got two good games going.”
This is the second time Hubbs has organized this kind of event,
as he also hosted a charity basketball game for Laura Beth West in 2021. This is
something he wants to continue to do when the need arises.
“You never want to see a kid or somebody have an uncontrollable
sickness or anything like that,” Hubbs explained. “But, if the time presents
itself and there’s someone in the community that we can wrap our arms around,
yeah, I would like to make it a thing if it's every year or every other year.”
The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m. with the men's to tipoff at 7 p.m. Here's a look at the rosters for Saturday night's action.
