After trailing by a touchdown late in the game following a pair
of big plays from Dyersburg Middle School running back Triston Edwards,
Northview rallied to cut the DMS lead to two points with a late touchdown
before being stopped on the two-point conversion which allowed the Trojans to
seal their 16-14 win over the Choctaws on Thursday night at J.C. Sawyers
Stadium.
“We fought tonight,” Dyersburg Head Coach John Bolan said. “Last
week was kind of disappointing. We came out and fought hard this week.
“We took care of the ball, first and foremost.”
With the game tied at 8-8 early in the fourth quarter, DMS
was able to capitalize on defense, stopping the Choctaws on 4th-and-six
to get the ball near the Northview 30-yard line.
From there, the Trojans drove the ball down the field as Edwards capped off the short drive with a three-yard run four the score with 4:08 left in the game. Edwards then got the ball on a sweep, breaking multiple tackles on his way across the goal line for the two-point conversion to put the black and gold on top 16-8.
“That was his homecoming,” Bolan said of Edwards’ two runs
on the drive to give the Trojans the lead. “He transferred in from Lake County.
He’s a big fullback.
“We needed him, really. And he fits right into our offense.”
Northview looked to answer but it needed a couple of big passes to do it after bad snap and a penalty, put them well behind the chains. But, Northview quarterback Will Trevathan hit an open Mason McCain who made a diving and rolling catch to secure a first down at the 33-yard line of DMS.
The DMS defense tightened up again and forced a 4th-and-three
which was converted into a first down by a seven-yard run from Trevathan. An
incomplete pass followed but Trevathan then hit Deshaun Davis for an 11-yard
pick up for a first down to give the Choctaws first and goal from the DMS
8-yard line. Trevathan then picked up four yards on first down before scoring
on a four-yard run with :43 seconds left.
On the two-point conversion, Trevathan followed a lead
blocker to towards the DMS side of the field and headed for the goal line.
After being met at the goal line by Trojan defenders, he was ruled down and the
two-point conversion ruled no good, leaving DMS ahead 16-14.
From there, the Trojans ran out the clock to seal the
two-point win.
“They came out with a plan,” Northview Head Coach Jason
Stewart said. “They came out in a different front from what they’ve shown on
film. The kids didn’t adjust and the coaches didn’t adjust. And, we looked back
in the first half.
“Second half, we got things going a little bit. We just left
it down to a play there and it just didn’t work out for us.”
An offensive miscue lead to the first score of the game
following a 0-0 opening quarter. With 5:30 left in the second stanza, a bad snap
sailed over Trevathan’s head deep in Northview territory. The Choctaw signal
caller was able to fall on the ball in the end zone and keep DMS from
recovering the ball, resulting in a safety and a 2-0 DMS lead.
DMS was able to get the ball back on the ensuing free kick and drive down the field, capping the first half with a two-yard run from Bentley Teeter for the touchdown as time ran out at the half. The two-point attempt failed, leaving DMS on top 8-0 at the break.
Northview was able to get on the board in the third quarter,
getting a 13-yard run from Trevathan for a touchdown with 5:15 left in the frame.
Despite the initial two-pointer failing, a facemask penalty was assessed on
Dyersburg, resulting in a second attempt, which was a successful Trevathan run
to tie the game at 8-8.
After an exciting game to open the season, both coaches
agreed that this game doesn’t need to define their season.
“It’s not our season,” Bolan said keeping things in
perspective after the win. “We know, going down 51, they get bigger, faster and
stronger.
“This is just the start of everything.”
“We told them in the huddle down there, how we respond to
this adversity is going to determine the kind of season we’ll have,” Stewart
said. “Hopefully the kids will respond – I know they’ll respond.
“They’re a great group. We have a tough Union City team coming
up this week. We’re going to do all we can to get better.”
Northview travels to Union City on Thursday, Aug. 21 while
DMS is off until Sept. 4 when the Trojans host Martin.
