With the beginning of August signaling the start of the high school preseason in Tennessee High School Football, Dyersburg traveled down to Lexington and returned home after a good scrimmage to open the preseason on Friday evening.

Dyersburg Head Coach Bart Stowe said his team had a lot of excitement and intensity during the scrimmage against his alma mater.

“The guys were excited and came out and played well,” Stowe said. “We did some really good things.

“We’ve got to keep on fighting and keep getting better at every practice. We’ve got to be more consistent in everything we do.”

Over the course of the scrimmage, Stowe said he felt his team gained in their confidence.

“We’re gaining experience,” the Trojan head coach said. “We’re a young football team.

“The offensive line and defensive line, there’s not many returning guys in those spots. The more snaps and more chances they get to line up together, the better they’re going to get.”

Stowe said he saw his team compete hard and was proud of the effort the Trojans gave against the Tigers.

But, consistency is something the Trojans need to improve on, according to their head coach.

“We’ve got to be more consistent,” Stowe said. “Defense and offense, we’ve got to play with our pads down.

“We want to play with good pad level and have consistency on our blocking assignments offensively. And, defensively, our alignments, stunts and tackling. We had some balls get outside of us.”

Overall, Stowe felt it was a good first scrimmage for his team.

“We took a good step forward,” the Trojan head coach said. “I’m looking forward to this week’s practice and to see us have another good scrimmage against a tough Milan team on Friday.”

The Trojans’ second scrimmage is set for Friday evening at J.C. Sawyers Stadium with a scheduled start time of 5 p.m. though that could change depending on heat.

“The goal is to just get better and keep moving forward,” Stowe said. “Keep chopping wood. Learn how we do things and keep getting better as a team.

“Get better as an individual, get better as a group, and get better as a team. Right now, it’s about routine. We’re in school now so that’s a different routine. We were practicing in the morning and now we’re going after school. That’s a different routine that we’ve got to do.”
