In a battle of avian-themed teams, the Lady Falcons found themselves in for a dogfight as it took a three-set rally before Lake County was able to escape with a 3-2 win over Christ Classical Academy on Monday night in the Hillcrest Baptist Church Gymnasium.

After falling behind after a tough first set and a strong second set by the Lady Eagles, Lake County was able to get going in the third set. The Lady Falcons jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the third set and needed every bit of that lead as a scrappy CCA team rallied to cut the Lake County lead to 21-19 later in the set. The Lady Falcons were able to recover from the home team’s rally and escape the third set with a 25-19 win.

Lake County jumped out to a 6-1 lead early in the fourth set thanks to a pair of aces from Presley Eddlemon. But, the CCA girls continued to battle, cutting the Lady Falcon lead to three twice during the fourth set. The Lady Eagles finally closed the gap with freshman Lilly Tucker on the line as she served back-to-back aces to tie the game before an unforced error got her off the line before she could repeat her serving performance from the first set. Lake County was able to fend off CCA from there, taking the set 25-23 after an Eddlemon ace.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the early stages of the fifth set before an ace from Lake County’s Renesmee Harrell and a Destaney Mullins kill helped the Lady Falcons climb back into it and tie the game moments later despite an ace by Lady Eagle Mikinley Church. CCA looked poised to pull away late after an ace by Rebecca Kirby but a trio of Eddlemon aces gave the Lady Falcons match point. CCA again rallied and pushed the set into extra points before two aces by Lake County’s Bryleigh Walls sealed the 17-15 win for the Lady Falcons.

The opening set of the match was the most back-and-forth and competitive of the night. Lake County took a 24-19 lead late in the set before a string of points with Tucker on the serving line tied the set. Both teams battled for points before CCA took the set 29-27.

CCA then claimed the second set, 25-10, to take a 2-0 set lead.

Lake County returns to action on Tuesday when the Lady Falcons travel to South Fulton at 6 p.m.
