With the regular season approaching and the Battle For Reelfoot on the docket for later this month, the Falcons opened their preseason schedule on the road on Friday night with a scrimmage against the Tornadoes in Union City.

When all was said and done, Lake County Head Coach Hunter Short seemed pleased with the results of his team’s first foray into the preseason.

“Overall, I’d say the scrimmage was a success,” Short said. “First fall scrimmages always tell you a lot about the kind of team you have after going months beating up on each other. It was good to see our kids compete against someone else besides ourselves.”

When asked what he was pleased most with during the scrimmage with the Tornadoes, Short pointed to his team’s physicality.

“I saw lots of things that I like but one of the bigger things that I saw was the physicality we played with from start to finish,” Short explained. “The pursuit to the ball was another thing that stood out to me. We didn’t cramp at all which I know it was cooler but still dressing 21 kids and no one cramps in the first fall scrimmages is always a plus.

“We didn’t turn the ball over either which will always make a coach happy.”

On the other side of the coin, after just one of the team’s three scrimmages in the books, there are still things to work on as the second-year Lake County head coach pointed out.

“Our tackling at times wasn’t where we want it but obviously it’s early,” Short added. “We had a couple of assignment errors that caused a couple of their touchdowns so we will need to clean that up.”

Lake County will be at home on Friday, Aug. 8 when the Falcons host Hollow Rock-Bruceton in the team’s second scrimmage. Start time will be announced soon.

Short talked about what is ahead this week for his team leading into the showdown with the Tigers.

“Keep stacking good days, competing daily, and being consistent,” he pointed out. “We have a resilient group of kids that are hard workers.”
