The Trojans scored first but a trio of consecutive Martin scores
proved to be too much as Dyersburg Middle School fell 24-14 to the Chargers on
Thursday evening at J.C. Sawyers Stadium.
DMS got on the board first late in the first quarter as
Cooper Duggan broke free for an 86-yard touchdown with 2:15 left in the frame.
The two-point conversion failed, leaving Dyersburg’s lead at 6-0.
But, Martin answered at the end of the frame with a touchdown on the last play of the quarter. The Chargers tacked on the two-point conversion to head into the second quarter with an 8-6 lead.
The Chargers held the two-point lead through much of the
second frame and added to it with a late touchdown and two-pointer to go up
16-6 at the half.
Martin added another touchdown midway through the third
quarter. The two-pointer pushed the Charger lead to 24-6 with 4:52 left in the frame.
DMS got back on the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter as Bentley Teeter hit an open Izaiah Glynn for a 35-yard touchdown pass. Duggan added the two-point conversion to cut the Charger lead to 24-14 with 6:10 left in the game.
Dyersburg looked to cut further into the lead after a
defensive stopped and seemed poised to following a halfback pass from Glynn to
Duggan took the Trojans across midfield to just inside the Martin 40-yard line.
But, Martin was able to secure its defense and hold Dyersburg to secure the
win.
Dyersburg Middle returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 9 when
the Trojans travel to Lakeland Prep at 6:30 p.m.
