Though McNairy Central was the first team to get on the board on Friday night in Selmer, Dyersburg proved it was more than capable of making its fans forget that as the Trojans eclipsed the 50-point mark for the first time this season as the black and gold took a 53-18 win over the Bobcats.

Dyersburg Head Coach Bart Stowe agreed it was a key moment in the game for the Trojans to answer the early touchdown by the Bobcats. It was something that set the tone for the rest of the night in the win for Dyersburg.

“Offensively, we scored every time we had the ball with our first group in there,” Stowe explained. “I am really proud of them.

“Special teams stepped up and they got a score. That was huge to answer right there.”

The Bobcats were able to get on the board early as Jaderius Gaines broke free for a 47-yard touchdown run with 7:07 left in the first quarter. The extra point failed, leaving the McNairy lead at 6-0.

Dyersburg’s answer was immediate. On the ensuing kickoff, Jaden Harris took the kick at the Trojan 15-yard line and returned it 85 yards for the score. But, Elian Gonzalez’s extra point failed, leaving the score tied at 7-7.

The Trojan defense stepped up and held the Bobcats to a three-and-out. After the punt, Dyersburg went back to work on offense.

It didn’t take long for the black and gold to get on the board as Necari Hall scored on the first play of the drive from 39 yards out. Dyersburg went for two but the run was ruled no good as the Trojans took a 12-6 lead.

Another Bobcat three-and-out followed which set up the next Dyersburg score. Early in the next Dyersburg drive, Trojan quarterback Logston Morgan found an open Kendrick Gourley for a 35-yard touchdown pass. Terrell Ragland then added the two-point conversion to give Dyersburg a 20-6 lead late in the opening frame.

The Bobcats got on the board on their next drive as McNairy quarterback Jackson King scored on a three-yard keeper to cap the next McNairy possession. The Bobcats continued to struggle with extra points as the kick failed leaving Dyersburg ahead 20-12 with 9:26 left in the half.

After starting on their own 33-yard line, the Trojans benefited from a long Hall run which took the Dyersburg’s offense across midfield to the Central 11-yard line. Harris then capped the drive with a two-yard run for the score. The PAT attempt failed as Dyersburg’s lead extended to 26-12.

Central was forced to punt on its next possession and the Trojans looked to tack on another score before the half. Dyersburg was successful in doing so as the black and gold got an 11-yard touchdown run by Demond Dillard. The two-point attempt failed as Dyersburg took a 32-12 lead into the half after a missed McNairy Central field goal attempt to end the half.

Dyersburg was able to get on the board early in the second half with a 46-yard run for a score. The extra point extended the Trojan lead to 39-12 with 6:30 left in the third quarter.

McNairy was able to get the score back and cut the Dyersburg lead to 39-18 with a short touchdown run with 1:22 left in the third quarter.

The Trojans added to their lead moments later as a Dillard run for three yards and a score put Dyersburg back on the board. The extra point put Dyersburg on top 46-18 with 15 seconds left in the third quarter.

Dyersburg tacked on more score in the fourth quarter as Ty’marion Hills scored on a 20-yard run. The PAT pushed the Trojan lead to 53-18 and brought the mercy rule into play with about ten minutes left in the game.

“Our extra point was shaky tonight,” Stowe said. “Then we went for two and we got it then we didn’t get it.

“We’ve got to hone in on our extra point play and work on them more. Defensively, we’ve got to make adjustments. Their quarterback, he scrambled around and that’s tough to deal with. Our defense made some adjustments and we got them when we had to have them.”

Hall led the way for the Trojans on the ground with 13 carries for 169 yards. As a team, the Trojans carried the ball 37 times for 354 yards.

The Trojan head coach also added one of the more important factors at the end of the night for the Dyersburg Football program.

“We came on the road and got our first region win,” Stowe added.

The win moves Dyersburg to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in Region 7-3A.

The Trojans will return home after two straight weeks of long trips when Dyersburg hosts Bolivar Central for Homecoming 2025 on Friday night, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
