Trailing by two scores after one half of play, Three Oaks was able to get things going offensively in the second half as a pair of Zay Washington touchdowns as well as the two-point conversions that went with them gave the Choctaws from Upper Finley Road a win over Northview in the Battle of the Choctaws on Thursday night at Three Oaks Middle School.

Three Oaks wasted little time getting on the board in the third quarter after being shutout for a half. A 66-yard touchdown run by Zay Bowden put Three Oaks on the board with 7:11 left in the third frame. Brylan Hatch then hit Carsyn Scott in the front corner of the end zone for the two-point conversion to cut the Northview lead to 12-8.

The Three Oaks defense was able to keep Northview from answering but the defense of the Choctaws from Newbern was up to the challenge as Hatch was intercepted on the ensuing Three Oaks possession.

Three Oaks’ defense answered by forcing a punt to get the ball back for the home team.

Three Oaks was able to cash in on this opportunity as Washington broke free for a 27-yard touchdown run with 5:58 left in the game. Kii Wallace added the two-point conversion to extend Three Oaks’ lead to 16-12.

Northview looked to answer as the Choctaws from Newbern were able to drive into Three Oaks’ territory. But, a holding penalty proved costly and helped lead to a turnover on downs.

From there, Three Oaks was able to run out the clock thanks to a strong running attack, a costly Northview penalty late and a late big gain from TOMS to secure the win.

The win marked Three Oaks Head Coach Chris Eaves 100th career win.

Three Oaks will be in action next Thursday, Sept. 25, when the Choctaws travel to Troy to take on Obion County. Northview returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 25 when the Choctaws host Ripley.
