Dyer County has been on the road quite a bit this season
after opening with two away games then playing three of the four games heading
into last week’s bye week away from Choctaw Stadium.
The Choctaws, coming off their bye, will begin the final
stretch of three games and will not be away from Newbern for the remainder of the
regular season. Dyer County begins that stretch against the University School of
Jackson this Friday night.
Dyer County Head Coach Justin Dubruiel talked about the importance
of the timing of last week’s bye week.
“We needed the bye week and fall break,” Dubruiel said. “You
look at our first scrimmage to now. Eight of 10 weeks on the road to start,
that starts to wear on you.
“We had some kids that needed some time off just to heal all
the bumps and bruises you get playing football.”
Offensively, Dubruiel said the offensive line of the Bruins
is the key to their offense.
“They are big and physical up front and control the line of
scrimmage,” the Choctaw head coach said. “They have a running that is quick to
the edge and a quarterback that is a good field general.”
Dubruiel points to the Dyer County defensive front as being
key to stopping the Bruin offensive attack.
“Our entire box needs to have a good game from defensive
lineman to walk down safeties,” Dubruiel said. “Our secondary is going to have
to communicate on the back end because they get in a bunch of formations.”
The Choctaws will run into similar challenges when dealing with
the USJ defense.
“Same as the offense, their defensive line and linebackers
are a big bunch of dudes that can run to the football and tackle well,”
Dubruiel said.
The young men making the blocks up front for the Choctaws are
going to be a key this week.
“We are going to push our offensive line to challenge them
to create lanes in our run game to open up the pass game,” Dubruiel said.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. this Friday night in Newbern.
