Thanks to a quarterfinal round bye, Dyer County opened its postseason a day later than the rest of the remaining teams in District 13AA and rolled past South Gibson in three sets on Tuesday night on the Choctaws’ home court in Newbern.
Dyer County jumped out to a 5-0 lead early thanks to a Katie
Beth Caldwell kill and an Evie Rogers ace. The Choctaws added to their lead
moments later with a pair of Caldwell aces. Having set the tone early, the orange
and white got kills from Blair Acree, Emma Wray and Erin Foster before a trio
of kills by Rylee Key sealed Dyer County’s 25-6 win in the opening set.
A pair of early Key kills helped Dyer County jump out to a
3-0 lead to open the second frame. South Gibson put together a brief lead
before kills from Zoey Morris, Wray and Acree built a 15-6 lead. Later in the
frame, a Caldwell kill and a kill and a tip from Key sealed the Choctaws’ 25-13
win in the second set.
Dyer County continued to roll in the third set, getting out to an 11-1 lead to start the frame. After kills from Caldwell and Key built a 14-3 lead, Dyer County ended the match on an 11-3 run punctuated by an Ella Rain Crawford kill to seal the 25-6 win and a three-set sweep.
The Choctaws return to action on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
when the Choctaws take on Crockett County in the District 13AA Tournament
Championship.
