Coming into Friday’s second and final round of the TSSAA
Class A Golf Tournament at Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville in second place,
Dyer County was not able to catch the eventual champion but did secure the school’s
first-ever state runner-up in golf with a strong final round performance.
Leading the way for Dyer County, freshman Beau Thurman shot
his second straight one-over, 73 to take fifth place overall in the individual
competition.
After shooting a 78 during the first day of the tournament,
Hoss Harrison responded with a 75 to finish the tournament just nine shots over
par and in a three-way tie for 14th place.
Seth LaRue followed his opening round 80 with an 81 to
finish 17 over for the two-day tournament and in a six-way tie for 32nd
place.
Rounding out the Dyer County scoring was Benjamin Williams,
who shot his second straight 82 to finish 20 over and tied for 40th.
Signal Mountain took the team championship, finishing 22 shots
ahead of the Choctaws. SM’s Sam Otwell was the individual champion, finishing
one under par.
Dyersburg’s John David Morris also had a strong finish to his state tournament stay, shooting a 76 on the second day for four-over on the final 18 holes. His two-day total of 149 and five over par was good for eighth place in the state.
On the girls’ side, Lady Choctaw golfer Kennedy Hill entered
the final round in 28th place. Hill, in her final round as a high
school golfer before returning to the Dyer County volleyball team on Monday, improved
by six strokes to shoot an 80 on the day. The finish propelled her into a tie
for 23rd place.
