Dyer County takes care of South Side, 63-14

The Dyer County Choctaws picked up their third win in a row
and, more importantly, helped get themselves in a better position to host a
playoff game in two weeks as the orange and white defeated South Side 63-14
this past Friday night at Choctaw Stadium in Newbern.
The Choctaws got on the board early and often as Landon Daniels hit Devin Hayward for a three-yard touchdown pass. The Jotham Powell extra point put Dyer County on top 7-0 with 10:38 left in the first quarter.
The orange and white didn’t wait long to add another touchdown
as Ke’Anthony Barbee scored on a 30-yard run to extend the Dyer County lead.
The Choctaws got the extra point to go up 14-0 with 10:05 left in the opening
frame.
South Side was able to get on the board and cut the Dyer County
lead to 14-6.
The Choctaws answered in the form of a 35-yard run from
Barbee to make it a two-score game again. The extra point put Dyer County on
top 21-6 with 4:25 left in the first quarter.
The scoring continued to come in a frenzy as the defense got
into the act. Choctaw Grant West snagged an errant Hawk pass and returned it 56
yards for the score. The extra point extended the Dyer County lead to 28-6 with
4:06 left in the stanza.
The Choctaws got on the board again in the second quarter as
Daniels hit an open Maddox Kolwick for a 16-yard touchdown pass. The extra
point put the orange and white on top 35-6 with 11:29 left in the first half.
Dyer County also got a three-yard run from Barbee for a
touchdown later in the quarter. The extra point put the Choctaws on top 42-6
with 8:43 left in the half.
The Hawks answered with a touchdown and a two-point
conversion to cut into the Dyer County lead at 42-14.
Dyer County went right back to work as Brice Fulton added a one-yard
touchdown run. The extra point extended the Dyer County lead back to 49-14 with
5:29 left in the half.
Late in the second quarter, Barbee tacked on another
touchdown. This one was a 34-yard scoring run with 1:14 left in the half. The extra
point gave Dyer County a commanding 56-14 halftime lead.
With the clock running in the second half, Dyer County added
a touchdown in the fourth quarter as Mason Dudas hit Kolwick for a 24-yard
touchdown pass. The extra point pushed the Choctaw lead to 49 points with 7:46 left
in the game.
Dyer County will host Lexington on Thursday night as the
Choctaws will hold Senior Night ceremonies. If the orange and white defeat the
Tigers, the Choctaws will host the first round of the TSSAA Class 4A Playoffs on
Friday, Nov. 7.
