With the end of a tough three-game stretch coming this week,
the Dyersburg football team returns home to host undefeated Westview, the team
at the top of the TWSA/USA Today Network Class 3A Prep Poll, this Friday night
at J.C. Sawyers Stadium.
The Trojans are coming off back-to-back losses including
last week’s loss to 31-14 loss at Covington. Last Friday night, the black and
gold was driving down the field late before a fumble led to a game-clinching
touchdown for the Chargers.
Trojan Head Coach Bart Stowe talked about what he wants his
team to take away from last week’s loss.
“Just very proud of the way they played and competed all
night long,” Stowe explained. “We had a really good week of practice and I am
so proud of the way they competed.
“We came up a little short. There were some opportunities we
had to make some plays but we just didn’t execute on them.”
After losses on the road to Crockett County and Covington,
Dyersburg welcomes top-ranked and unbeaten Westview to J.C. Sawyers Stadium.
The area of concern for the Trojan defense is easy to see in
Westview quarterback Graham Simpson and the various skill players he has as
weapons in his arsenal.
“We’ve got to compete,” Stowe said simply. “We’ve got to
learn from last week and take how we competed and fought and played on defense
last week.
“We’ve got to bring that this week defensively with a great
effort. And, the guys will.”
The Trojan secondary will need a big game to help stop the
Westview attack. But there is more to it than that, as Stowe explained.
“We’ve got to cover well,” Stowe pointed out. “Everything works
together.
“The D-line, the linebackers and the secondary. Good team
defense and we’ve got to cover the whole field. They’ve got some good players
and so do we.”
On the other side of the ball, the Trojans will have to play
better, according to Dyersburg’s head coach.
“We’ve got to execute better,” Stowe added. “We’ve got to
score more points.
“We’ve got to block better. We’ve got to run better. And we’ve
got to throw better.”
The Trojan head coach said the Chargers are very sound on
defense.
“They’ve got good players on both sides of the ball and on
special teams,” Stowe pointed out. “They’re all very talented.
“We’ve just got to execute. I just look forward to going
against them and competing like we’ve done many years in the past.”
The offensive line will need a good game to set the tone for
the Trojans.
“Do what we do offensively,” Stowe said.
Stowe added the team has had a real good week of practice
and he looks forward to Friday night.
“It’s great competition,” Stowe added. “Martin-Westview, we’ve
played them a lot of times.
“Yes, they’ve got a good ballclub and so do we. We look
forward to getting on the field with them.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at J.C. Sawyers Stadium in Dyersburg.
