A back-and-forth battle between the Trojans and Cardinals
came down to almost the last play on Wednesday night at J.C. Sawyers Stadium as
Dyersburg scored late but was hampered by a penalty enforced on the two-point
attempt and fell 38-36 to Brighton in the West Tennessee Athletic Conference Class
AA Championship Game.
The DMS Trojans trailed with under two minutes left in the game
but the black and gold made their last drive of the season mean something.
Riding the legs of Triston Edwards down the field, the Trojans were able to get
into the end zone with 20 seconds left in the game on a three-yard run by
Edwards. But, a taunting penalty was called on the score and the infraction was
enforced on the two-point conversion attempt. Still, Dyersburg nearly tied the
score as Hudson Gadlage’s pass fell just incomplete and preserved the two-point
lead for the Cardinals.
From there, after recovering the ensuing onside kick, Brighton
ran out the clock to secure the championship.
Brighton was able to score on its first drive of the game as
Antonio Jackson scored on a 12-yard run with 3:57 left in the first quarter.
Michael Gilliland was stopped on the two-point conversion on a quarterback keeper
to keep the Cardinals' lead at 6-0.
Dyersburg was forced to punt the ball away but held Brighton
on four plays deep in Cardinal territory as BMS went for it on fourth-and-long
from its own 14-yard line with the Trojans providing the stop.
From there, Dyersburg was able to get on the board early in the second quarter on a sneak from Gadlage with five minutes left in the half. Edwards added the two-point conversion to put the Trojans on top 8-6.
After another stop, the Trojans were able to get on the
board again as Edwards scored on a 49-yard run with 3:53 left in the half. The
two-pointer failed, leaving Dyersburg’s lead at 14-6.
Brighton was able to answer on its next possession, getting a
10-yard touchdown run from Jackson with 1:04 left in the half. A Gilliland pass
for the two-point conversion was successful, tying the score at 14-14.
The score didn’t stay tied long as a Trojan fumble deep in
Dyersburg territory late in the half proved costly. Gilliland hit Trae Williams
for a 12-yard touchdown pass with five seconds left in the half to put Brighton
up. Gilliland then added the two-pointer to give the Cardinals a 22-14 halftime
lead.
The Trojans were able to start the second half hot as Edwards
broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run just 13 seconds into the third quarter.
Izaiah Glynn tacked on the two-pointer to tie the game at 22-22.
Brighton again had an answer as the Cardinals were able to
cap a scoring drive with an eight-yard run by Jackson with 2:54 left in the
third quarter. The two-pointer was good, putting Brighton back on top 30-22.
Dyersburg battled back and was able to get back on the board
quickly as Edwards scored on a ten-yard run with 1:10 left in the third
quarter. Cooper Duggan added the two-point conversion to tie the game at 30-30.
But, Brighton was able to get on the board late in the
fourth quarter on a Gilliland three-yard run. The two-pointer was successful,
giving Brighton a 38-30 lead with just over two minutes left in the game.
The loss ends Dyersburg’s season with a record of 7-2.
