With the postseason journey moving further down the road to Murfreesboro, Dyer County put in a dominating performance in their fourth meeting with Crockett County to defeat the Lady Cavaliers in three sets to win the Region 7AA Championship for the fifth straight season.
The match opened with dominance by the Choctaws as Zoey
Morris recorded five aces while Rylee Key added three kills as part of a 10-0
run to open the match. Dyer County continued to add to its lead with a pair of
Katie Beth Caldwell aces to build a 15-12 advantage. The net play helped finish
off the first set with kills from Emma Wray, Blair Acree and Erin Foster to go
along with a Key block and another Morris ace to seal the 25-9 victory.
Dyer County continued its momentum into the second set with a 6-1 run to open the frame. Eventual Region 7AA Most Valuable Player Rylee Key had a pair of kills and a block to take a 10-3 lead. After a Wray kill put the Choctaws up 14-6, Crockett County was able to put together a rally to cut the Dyer County lead to 22-11. But, a Key kill stopped the rally as Dyer County outscored Crockett 3-1 following that to take the second set 25-12.
The Choctaws dominated the start of the third set as well
with kills from Key and Acree to take an 11-4 lead which eventually swelled to
21-7. Crockett County was able to cut into the Dyer County lead but the
Choctaws weren’t going to be denied. After getting possession back, an Acree
block sealed the 25-13 win in the third set as well as the match and region
title.
Dyer County will host the TSSAA Class AA Sectional Match on Thursday when the Choctaws will face Millington for the right to go to the state tournament. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
