For the first time in over a decade, the Lady Trojans will not play in the district semifinals as Dyersburg’s volleyball team fell in four sets to South Gibson in the District 13AA Tournament on Monday night at Dyer County in Newbern.

Dyersburg got off to a slow start and trailed 2-0 after the first two sets. But, the Lady Trojans came out stronger in the third set, getting a kill and a block from Murphy Morgan as well as a Payton Tyler ace to take a 7-3 lead. The black and gold were able to build a 10-6 lead moments later before a Bella Turnage kill and two more from Morgan added to the Lady Trojan lead. Morgan added an ace later in the set to get the Lady Trojans to set point before a Lady Hornet rally delayed Dyersburg taking the third set. A Taniyah Brooks kill sealed the 25-14 win in the second set.

The black and gold were unable to carry that momentum into the fourth set as the frame went back and forth early on before South Gibson built a 19-13 lead. The Lady Trojans were able to storm back and cut into the lead before taking the advantage outright for a 21-20 lead. But, with the game tied at 21-21, four straight unforced errors resulted in a quartet of South Gibson points and a 25-21 victory to seal the Lady Hornets’ four-set win over Dyersburg.

The Lady Trojans fell behind early in each of the first two sets. An 8-1 disadvantage in the first frame led to a 25-11 loss in the opener. Despite falling behind 7-1 in set two, Dyersburg battled back to take a late lead before South Gibson ended the frame with a flurry and a 27-25 win to go up 2-0.

The loss brought an end to Dyersburg’s season as well the high school careers of seniors Izzie Odom and Brooks.

South Gibson moves on to the District 13AA Semifinals at 5 p.m. on Tuesday where the Lady Hornets will meet top-seeded Dyer County in Newbern.
