With three weeks left in the regular season, Dyersburg is coming
off a bye week and heads into a tough two-game stretch of Region 7-3A contests
with the first being a trip down Highway 51 to Covington this Friday night.
Dyersburg spent Fall Break last week in the bye as the Trojans
enter the final stretch of games with a 5-2 record and are one of three teams which
remain undefeated in Region 7-3A play.
“It’s been very important for us to step back and look at
ourselves right here,” Dyersburg Head Coach Bart Stowe said. “We’ve worked on
some things like conditioning and getting healthy.
“We’ just really were looking at ourselves and getting
better fundamentally – offense, defense and special teams.”
Dyersburg and Covington have become rivals over the past
several years with plenty of meetings both in the regular season and in the
postseason.
“We’re definitely in a tough stretch and we look forward to
the competition,” Stowe said.
Covington enters Friday night’s game with a 7-0 (3-0) record
and is a run-oriented team according to the Dyersburg head coach.
“They run the Wing T and they run the option,” Stowe
explained. “They run the ball when they want to run it and throw the ball to
mix it up.
“They’re really dynamic on offense and you’ve got to defend
all of their backs. Their quarterback runs the ball. So do the fullback,
halfback and wingback. They really do a good job dispersing the ball to all of
them.”
Stowe said, with the option, every Trojan on defense has a
responsibility.
“You’ve got to do your responsibility,” Stowe said. “Defensively,
you’ve got a group that’s assigned to the fullback, a group that’s assigned to
the quarterback and a group that’s assigned to the pitch man.
“And, when they’re not running the option, they’ve got their
regular offense. They are very diverse and very dynamic in what they do.”
On the other side of the ball, there is a lot of similar
ground, according to the Trojan head coach.
“We both run similar offenses,” Stowe said. “So, their
defense is used to going against an offense like ours.
“Defensively, they have good size and speed everywhere. They’re
very sound. You can’t look at them and say they’ve got any weaknesses right
there. They’re very sound in what they do.”
Offensively, Stowe said the line has got to set the tone for
the team.
“Our backs have got to run the ball and protect the ball,” Stowe
pointed out. “Our receivers and quarterback have got to throw and catch the
ball and protect the ball.
“Everybody has got to do their part. We’ve got to play team
football. And, that’s the other thing going into this ballgame. All three phases
of the game have got to play well. We’ve got to work together and play complete
football – four quarters of it.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday night in Covington.
