Though the Trojans scored early against the Chargers on Friday
night in Covington, the Chargers scored 24 unanswered points over the second
and third quarters to aid them in taking a 31-14 win over Dyersburg in a Region
7-3A showdown.
After a three-and-out by the Chargers to open the game,
Dyersburg was able to pick up a quartet of first downs on their drive including
a pass from Logston Morgan to Necari Hall. All this set up a 13-yard touchdown
run by Peyton Hill with 4:26 left in the opening quarter to cap off the 70-yard
drive. Elian Gonzalez added the extra point to put the Trojans on top 7-0.
The Chargers were able to answer back in a big way as
Covington scored 24 unanswered points over the second and third quarters to
take a three-score lead into the fourth frame.
The Trojans cut into the lead in the fourth quarter when
Dyersburg ended its two-quarter scoring drought with a two-yard run by Demand Dillard
with 7:53 left in the game. Gonzalez added the extra point to trim the
Covington lead to 24-14.
Covington was able to recover the onside kick but Dyersburg’s
defense was able to force a three-and-out to get the ball back for the Trojan
offense.
Early in the ensuing drive, a penalty backed the Trojans up
but a pass from Morgan to Hall got the black and gold into a more manageable third-and-3.
With 4:32 left in the game, a fourth-and-3 play resulted in a first down on a
run by Quincy Terry to the 50-yard line. Morgan was able to pick up another
first down – this one with his feet – with 2:19 seconds at the Charger 30-yard
line. Later in the drive, a pass interference call on Covington gave Dyersburg
a fresh set of downs at the Charger 15-yard line. But, on second down with
about a minute left, a Trojan fumble was scooped up and returned 75 yards for
the game-clinching touchdown.
Dyersburg returns to action this Friday night at home as the
Trojans host another undefeated team, top-ranked Westview. Kickoff is set for 7
p.m. at J.C. Sawyers Stadium.
