Lake County had a tough start to the week as both basketball teams fell to visiting Obion County Central on Monday night in Tiptonville.

In girls’ action, the Lady Falcons saw their first-quarter lead disappear after struggling through the second and third quarters on the way to a 58-38 setback. In the nightcap, a strong second quarter by the Rebels proved to be the difference in Central’s 68-57 win over the Falcons.

The Lady Falcons led for much of the first quarter on the way to a one-point advantage at the end of one. But, Central stormed through the second and third quarters to propel the Lady Rebels to victory.

Led by six points from Laken Chism and a three-pointer by Mariah Valentine, the Lady Falcons took a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

But, Lake County struggled in the second quarter as the Lady Falcons were held to just a Yharia Bolden free throw over the final eight minutes of the first half. In the meantime, the Lady Rebels stormed through the frame, scoring 20 to take a 32-14 lead at the half.

The Lady Rebels continued to add to their lead in the second half, outscoring the Lady Falcons 15-8 in the third quarter on the way to the 20-point win.

Chism led the way for Lake County in the loss, scoring 16 points for the Lady Falcons.

After a slow start to things with a low-scoring opening quarter, Central dominated the second frame to help set the tone for the Rebel win.

Jataveion Ricks led the way for Lake County with five points in the opening frame as the Falcons trailed 9-8 after one quarter.

Central rolled through the second frame, though. While holding the Falcons to a Jax Poole three-pointer and a Ka’Devon Gross free throw during the final eight minutes of the first half, the Rebels scored 22 points in the second stanza to take a 31-12 halftime lead.

After a stalemated third quarter which saw both teams score two dozen points – highlighted by Aikee Ward hitting four treys for the Falcons – it turned out that Central needed that strong second frame. Though the Rebels held their double-digit lead during the final frame, Ward and the Falcons got hot and bit deep into the Central lead. Ward hit four more three-pointers as part of a Lake County rally to help the team end on a stronger note, even in a loss to the Rebels.

Ward led the way for Lake County with 23 points while Poole added 10 in the loss.

Lake County has a short turnaround as the Falcons and Lady Falcons travel to Jackson on Tuesday to face Liberty at 6 p.m.
