The Dyer County girls basketball team improved to 3-0 on the
year on Tuesday night, taking a 68-25 win over Ripley on Tuesday night in
Newbern.
The Lady Choctaws had a big first quarter which set the tone
for the evening. Molly Roberts had a pair of three-pointers and a bucket while
Julie Cogdill added another trey and two jumpers to help Dyer County take a
22-9 lead after one quarter.
Dyer County continued to add to its lead in the second
quarter. Thanks to a trio of three-pointers from Roberts as well as a trey and
a deuce from Ava Pearson, the Lady Choctaws took a 43-16 lead at the end of the
first half.
The orange and white pulled further away in the third
quarter. An 11-point frame by Alayna Leedy was the backbone of a 23-point frame
by the Lady Choctaws, who took a 66-23 lead heading into the third quarter.
From there, with the clock running in mercy rule, the Lady Choctaws
cruised to the win.
Roberts led the way for the Lady Choctaws with 20 points
while Leedy added 15. Cogdill tossed in 11 in the win for Dyer County.
The Lady Choctaws are off until Saturday when Dyer County
travels to the Ezell Harding Shootout against Columbia Academy in Nashville at 2:30 p.m.
Ripley boys 69, Dyer County 65
A slow start by the Choctaws doomed Dyer County’s boys to
their first loss of the season as a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter came
up just short.
Dyer County trailed by almost 20 points heading into the fourth
quarter as the Tigers looked poised to cruise to the win. But, the Choctaws
were not done as Dyer County chipped away at the Ripley lead. Jayden Tyler had
11 points during the final eight minutes which saw the orange and white whittle
the Tiger lead down to single digits heading into a minute left. After a Clay Dodds
three-pointer made it a 67-63 game, a layup by the senior late in the game made
it a one-possession game with just over 10 seconds left, his bucket cutting the
deficit to 68-65. Dyer County was forced to foul and Ripley was able to hit a
late free throw to allow the Tigers to escape Newbern with the win.
The Choctaws’ slow start made the come-from-behind attempt necessary
as Dyer County trailed 17-4 after one quarter and 23-14 at the half.
Dodds led Dyer County with 20 points while Tyler added 14 in
the loss.
Dyer County’s boys return to action on Friday when the Choctaws
face Gibson County in the Gibson County shootout at 6:30 p.m. in Dyer.
