Following a season-extending win last week at home against Lexington to earn their spot in the playoffs, Dyer County will open the postseason on Friday night as the Choctaws, the runner-up from Region 7-4A, host Lakeland Prep in Newbern.

“It was something to build on,” Dyer County Head Coach Justin Dubruiel said of last week’s win. “We need to keep stacking days where we can continue to get better and start hitting our peak and our stride.”

Friday’s matchup marks the Choctaws’ ninth straight trip to the playoffs while it will be the first-ever postseason game for the Lions.

Offensively, Dubruiel said Lakeland Prep are a Wing-T team.

“They like to run the ball, but the quarterback – based off stats that I’ve seen – he can throw the ball pretty well, too,” the Choctaw head coach explained. “They run the ball hard.

“They kind of get you in spots where you have to do some things defensively.”

For the Choctaw defense to have success against Lakeland Prep, the Dyer County linebackers and secondary will need big games.

“With our linebackers, if we continue to play like we did last week, and our secondary guys can continue to make sure we’re lined up in the right spot, then we should be ok,” Dubruiel said.

On the other side of the ball, the Lions’ defense is pretty physical, according to Dubruiel.

“The secondary can get after you a little bit,” the Choctaw head coach pointed out. “The defensive line has a little bit of size to it.”

Like always, Dubruiel said, the offensive line for the Choctaws will need to have a big game.

“I’m going to say the offensive line every time,” he explained. “They’re the guys that make the motor go.

“Those guys are the ones that get it going.”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Friday night in Newbern.
