With a pair of games at home this week, the Dyer County girls team got off to a strong start on Monday night with a 68-31 win over Trezevant in Newbern.
Along with picking up their fifth win in six games, the big
story coming out of the Lady Choctaw win was the night sophomore Ava Pearson had
in the victory. The sophomore broke the school record for steals in a game
(which she tied last season as a freshman) with ten while also recording a dozen
points and dealing out ten assists. She also grabbed eight rebounds to come up
just shy of a quadruple-double. Still, the sophomore’s night ended in the third
quarter with Dyer County well in the lead with a triple-double.
With three-pointers raining down in the opening quarter as
Molly Roberts sank a trio from beyond the arc and Anna Tatum tossing in two
more, the Lady Choctaws took a 23-6 lead after one quarter.
While holding the Lady Bears to just three points in the
second frame, Dyer County almost doubled their output from the opening frame. Pearson
and Roberts each led the way for the Lady Choctaws with five points apiece as
Dyer County took a 42-9 lead heading into the half.
Four Lady Choctaws recorded treys in the third quarter as part
of a 24-point frame with Roberts, Pearson, Tatum and Alayna Leedy adding trifectas
to the board. Dyer County took a commanding 66-19 lead into the final frame.
From there, the orange and white cruised to the win with the
clock running in mercy rule.
Roberts led the way for the Lady Choctaws with 17 points
while Tatum added 15 go along with Pearson’s triple-double.

In the nightcap, Dyer County took a big lead early then
cruised to a win to break a three-game losing skid.
The Choctaws got a big performance from Devin Hayward in the
opening frame, scoring 13 to lead the orange and white to a 27-9 lead after one
quarter.
While the Bears roared back with a 15-point second quarter,
Dyer County countered with a ten-point quarter from Clay Dodds as the senior
scored half of the Choctaw points in the second stanza. The Choctaws took a
47-24 lead into the half.
Jake Stanley had himself a big third quarter to help the Choctaws
surge through the first eight minutes of the second half. Stanley scored 11
points to go along with eight points from Dodds as Dyer County scored 34 points
in the frame to take an 81-33 lead into the final frame.
Dyer County cleared the bench in the final frame on the way
to the win.
Dodds scored 25 in the win while Hayward added 18.
Dyer County returns to action on Thursday night when the
Choctaws host Camden at 6 p.m. in Newbern.
