With district play approaching for both schools at the end of
the week, Dyer County’s boys were able to overcome an 11-point deficit going
into the final frame to take a 70-68 win on Tuesday night in Tiptonville
against Lake County.
Lake County was able to turn a six-point lead into a
double-figure advantage by the end of the third quarter thanks in part to seven
points from Jay Ricks. Five points each by Aikee Ward and J’Braylon Mays helped
the Falcons take a 57-46 lead over the Choctaws heading into the final frame.
While the Choctaw defense held Lake County to just five points in the first six minutes of the final frame, Dyer County was able to climb back into the game. The Choctaw rally was aided by a pair of Devin Hayward free throws to put the orange and white on top 62-61 with 2:19 left in the game. A Clay Dodds bucket moments later extended the Dyer County lead to three points. The Choctaws got a pair of Grant West free throws to pull ahead further as a pair of offsetting fouls were called with Lake County missing both attempts.
The Falcons caught a break after a Hayward steal when the
Choctaws committed a foul sending Jax Poole to the line where he hit both
attempts to cut the Dyer County lead to 66-63. After Dyer County was called for
traveling, a short jumper from Ka’Devon Gross cut the Choctaw lead to one. The
Choctaws quickly answered with a Bo Dodds layup then, following a Lake County
missed layup, added two Hayward free throws to go up five with 16 seconds left.
The Falcons cut it to two moments later with a Mark Owens three-pointer from
the corner after a drive from Gross set up the wide-open pass.
But, despite a pair of missed free throws on the other end, Dyer
County was able to escape with the win after a late Lake County three-point attempt
missed to end the game with the Choctaws on top.
Clay Dodds led the way for the Choctaws with 35 points while
Hayward added 13 in the win. Poole paced Lake County with 15 while Ward tossed
in 13 and Ricks added 11.
Dyer County girls 60, Lake County 47
Though Lake County kept it close early on, the Lady Choctaws
were able to create some breathing room on the way to a 13-point win.
Ten first-quarter points from Julie Cogdill helped counter
the Lake County effort led by Mariah Valentine’s six-point frame as the Lady Choctaws
took an 18-8 lead after one quarter.
The Lady Choctaws added to their lead in the second frame as
Molly Roberts’ six-point frame was aided by a five-point effort from Alayna Leedy
to push the Dyer County lead to 38-19 at the break.
Valentine scored ten of the Lady Falcons 12 points in the third
quarter. But, Dyer County came out hotter as Roberts led the way with a pair of
three-pointers while Cogdill and Ava Pearson each scored four to help the Lady
Choctaws take a 55-31 lead into the final frame.
From there, the Lady Choctaws held off Lake County for the win.
Cogdill led Dyer County with 18 points while Roberts added a
dozen. Valentine led everyone with 19 points in the Lake County loss while Laken
Chism added 12.
Dyer County returns home on Friday when the Choctaws and Lady
Choctaws host Haywood in the beginning of District 13-3A play at 6 p.m. Meanwhile,
the Falcons and Lady Falcons will host Dresden in the tipoff of District 14-A
play at 7 p.m. in Tiptonville.
