The Lady Choctaws continued their unbeaten start to the
District 13-3A schedule as Dyer County opened a week of district play with a 66-38
win over Obion County Central on Tuesday night in Newbern.
Dyer County jumped out to an early lead thanks to a
three-pointer by Molly Roberts to spark a 7-0 run capped by an Ava Pearson
layup. Despite taking a 9-2 advantage moments later after a Julie Cogdill
bucket, the Lady Choctaws saw their lead shrink to two points after a Natalie
Daniel bucket with 56 seconds left in the opening quarter. But, Dyer County got
a Pearson free throw and a layup to take a 14-9 lead after one frame.
The Lady Choctaws continued the momentum into the second
quarter as a pair of Cogdill free throws opened up a 12-0 run she also capped
with a layup at the 3:28 mark of the frame. Four points from Roberts helped extend
the Dyer County lead before a pair of Cogdill free throws pushed the Lady
Choctaw advantage to 32-12 at the half.
Coming out of the locker room in the third quarter, the Lady
Choctaws got a pair of buckets from Pearson as part of an 8-0 run to push the
Dyer County lead to 40-12 just over a minute into the half. Both teams battled
back and forth through the rest of the third quarter as the Lady Choctaws took
a 46-19 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
From there, Dyer County kept Central at bay on the way to the
28-point win.
Cogdill led the way for the Lady Choctaws with 19 points
while Roberts added 17. Pearson tossed in 13 in the win for Dyer County.

Dyer County was able to rally from as much as seven down in the third quarter – even leading as late as two minutes left in the game before Obion County Central rallied to grab the district win over the Choctaws.
The Choctaws trailed early after buckets from Central’s
Jadlynn Mosely and Levin Hendrix. Dyer County answered with a three-pointer
from Clay Dodds to take the lead then a layup from Dodds also extended the lead
to three points. A Mosely three-pointer tied the game before a late driving
layup by Jayden Tyler put Dyer County on top 9-7 after one quarter.
Talon Messer’s free throw early in the second quarter pushed
the Choctaw lead to three before another Mosely trey tied the game at 10-10. After
a pair of free throws put Dyer County back on top at 12-10, a three-pointer
from Mosely briefly put the Rebels ahead only to have a technical foul result
in two Dodds free throws to return the lead to Dyer County. The teams traded
buckets for a moment before a Mosley trey sparked a quick scoring spree to put
the Rebels up eight before a late Seabourn putback cut the Central lead to 28-22
at the half.
The Choctaws climbed very much back into it in the third
quarter. Buckets from Dodds, Grant West and Devin Hayward were the backbone of
a 7-2 scoring spree which cut the Rebel lead to four points with 4:35 left. Central
responded with a quick offensive flurry to build its lead to seven points with
1:48 left in the frame.
Dyer County completed its comeback with a pair of
three-pointers from Hayward and a bucket via goaltending by West before a late
Central score gave the Rebels a 41-40 lead heading into the final frame.
The orange and white took an early lead on a Hayward bucket but
Central retook the lead on a Hendrix jumper. Buckets from Choctaws Dodds and
Talon Messer put Dyer County back on top by three with 5:14 left in the game.
Carson Jones answered with a three-point play to tie the game.
Dodds answered with a three-pointer but a technical was
called on the Choctaws, resulting in a pair of free throws from Tanner Richmond.
A three-pointer from Mosley put Central ahead to stay as the Rebels only
allowed a late Seabourn bucket before sealing the win with a Richmond free
throw.
Dyer County was led by Dodds with 16 points while Hayward
had 14 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Dyer County returns to action on Friday when the Choctaws
and Lady Choctaws travel to Dyersburg in another District 13-3A tilt at 6 p.m.
