The Falcons led from buzzer to buzzer on Tuesday night
against Greenfield, but had to hold off a brief late rally by the Yellowjackets
before Lake County picked up its fifth straight win to move to 3-0 in District
14-A with a 65-54 win at home.
Lake County jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the opening frame then added to it with a 7-2 run capped by free throws from Aikee Ward but supported by two buckets by Mark Owens to take a 15-6 lead with 1:37 left in the opening quarter. Greenfield ended the frame strong, cutting into the Falcon lead with a jumper from Easton Sullivan and a three-pointer by Nick Brown to cut the Lake County advantage to 15-11 at the end of one quarter.
The Falcons answered in the opening moments of the second
quarter. A three-pointer by Ka’Devon Gross and another from Ward helped push
the Lake County lead to 24-13. Greenfield answered with a Baker Briggs bucket
to cut the lead back to seven before a 7-0 run by the Falcons helped Lake
County take a 31-20 lead into the half.
Lake County dominated much of the third quarter as the
Falcons answered an early Weston Porter bucket with a 12-2 run that build the green
and gold’s lead to 43-24 with five minutes left in the frame. The Yellowjackets
battled back down the stretch in the third frame, cutting the Falcon lead to 47-36
heading into the fourth frame.
Greenfield again cut into the Lake County lead in the opening
stages of the fourth quarter, cutting it back to 47-41 before the Falcons
answered with a quick run capped by a pair of Jay Ricks buckets to go up 55-41.
The Yellowjackets continued to fight, though, rallying again late in the frame
with a run ended by a Brown bucket to cut the Falcon lead to 57-51 with 1:19
left.
Lake County was able to seal the win late, getting a pair of
Xander Hertel free throws along with a Ward three-pointer with 38 seconds left
which gave the senior 1,000 career points while giving the Falcons an 11-point
lead on the way to the win.
Jax Poole led the way for the Falcons with 16 points while
Ward added 13. Ricks and Hertel tossed in 10 each for Lake County in the win. Brown
led Greenfield with 20 points while Biggs added 11. Porter scored 10 in the

The Lady ’Jackets scored early and often on Tuesday, coming
into the Tiptonville and leaving with a 35-point, mercy-rule win over Lake
County.
The loss to the defending TSSAA Class A State Champion
Greenfield girls snapped a four-game winning streak by the Lady Falcons and
dropped LCHS to 2-1 in District 14-A play.
Lake County was held to lone buckets from Laken Chism and Destaney Mullins in the opening frame. In the meantime, Greenfield got a nine-point frame from Ella Porter highlighted by a three-pointer to take a 19-4 lead after one.
The Lady Falcon offense got going a little better in the
second stanza. A pair of treys and a layup from Chism along with a Yharia
Bolden bucket more than doubled the team’s first-quarter output. But, Greenfield’s
roll continued as Porter scored ten in the frame as the Lady ’Jackets took a comfortable
37-14 lead at the half.
The third quarter belonged to Greenfield as the Lady ’Jackets
pulled away thanks largely to an 18-point effort from Rayanna Fisher which
helped the visiting team push its lead to 59-23 heading into the final frame.
Over the last eight minutes with the clock running and the
mercy rule in effect, Lake County outscored Greenfield 5-4 on the way to the Lady
’Jacket win.
Porter led the way for Greenfield with 24 points while Fisher
tossed in 21. Chism paced Lake County with 14 in the loss.
Greenfield returns to action as the Lady ’Jackets and
Yellowjackets are scheduled to host South Fulton on Friday at 6 p.m. Lake
County returns to action on Thursday as their home games against Gleason have
been moved up to Thursday with boys action tipping off at 6:30 p.m.
