Lake County’s boys ended their three-game week on a positive note, winning their second game in less than 24 hours. But, it took a strong effort down the stretch as the Falcons had to fend off a surging Liberty Tech team before claiming a 60-58 win on Saturday in Tiptonville.

The Falcons trailed by two going into the second half after a late bucket by Liberty before the half. Lake County opened the third quarter as Jay Ricks and J’braylon Mays got early buckets. Liberty stayed close and answered four points from Falcon Jax Poole moments later with a quick 5-0 run to cut the Lake County lead to 35-34 with 4:53 left in the frame.

The green and gold played stronger down the stretch, getting a three-pointer from Mays with just under two minutes left in the frame to go along with a bucket by Ricks to take a 44-39 lead into the final frame.

Both teams traded buckets back and forth through the first half of the final frame allowing Lake County to keep a four-point lead. The Falcons got two buckets from Mays to go along with a Ricks layup to build a 57-47 lead with 3:17 left. The Crusaders had one last rally left in them as Liberty went on an 11-0 run to take a 58-57 lead following a Corey Shaw three-pointer with 30 seconds left.

Lake County’s answer was immediate as Ka’Devon Gross drove into the lane then dished out to Mays for a bucket with 15 seconds left. After a stop on the other end, Mays hit one of two free throws to seal the two-point win for the Falcons after a late Liberty miss.

Ricks and Mays each led the way for the Falcons with 19 points each in the win.

Meanwhile, the Lady Falcons got six points from Laken Chism as well as four by Yharia Bolden to go along with a Mariah Valentine three-pointer to take a 39-37 lead after three quarters.

Liberty battled back and caught up to the Lady Falcons on three occasions, tying the game at 45, 47 and 49. Lake County answered in a big way, getting an 8-0 run to create some breathing room after a Chism bucket.
