Lady Trojans open week with shutout

  Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Dyersburg got the month of March wrapped up and started the week off with on the right track with a 3-0 win over visiting Covington at Doug French Field on Monday evening. After getting a single from Avery Hicks in the bottom of the first and a one-out double by Addie Gatlin in the bottom of the second, Dyersburg broke through to get on the board the following inning. Bella Turnage singled to lead off the inning then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. But, the next two batters were retired and it looked as though Turnage was going to be stranded at third. Hicks came through, singling her in to put Dyersburg on top 1-0 after three innings. The Lady Trojans got on the board again in the bottom of the fifth. Chelby Jordan singled then stole second before advancing to third on an Izzie Odom groundout. Lady Eagles walk it off to avoid sweep

  Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The Lady Eagles bounced back from a 4-1 loss in the opening game of the day to battle back from a tough break in the top of the seventh with a 5-4 walk-off win over Volunteer State at Dyersburg State on Friday evening to avoid the doubleheader sweep. Dyersburg State took a 4-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning and looked ready to close out Vol State by getting a grounder for an out to open the inning. But, Carden drew a walk then Harrison doubled. Fuqua followed with a single to load the bases. DSCC pitcher Emmie Bullington got a grounder back to herself and threw home for the force out for the second out of the frame. But, a liner to right was misplayed by Lady Eagle Allie Shires who lost her footing which resulted in a bases clearing triple – initially. Trojans close week with win over North Side

  Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports After a tough start at the plate during the first two games of the week, Dyersburg bounced back on Friday to close the week out with a 4-0 win over visiting North Side on Friday night at Tom Mathis Field. Dyersburg had the bases loaded with two out in the bottom of the third as Brett Horner and Alex Page singled then Will Leonard was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But, a fly out ended the Trojan threat with the score remaining tied at 0-0. The Trojans managed to get a runner on in the bottom of the fourth as Ty Seaton drew a two-out walk but was stranded when the next batter flew out to keep the game tied. After four scoreless innings, the Trojans were finally able to punch through in the bottom of the fifth inning with a pair of runs. A busy week for the Choctaws softball team concluded on the road in Murfreesboro as the Dyer County girls traveled east and returned home winners of three of the four games they played in during the Southern Warrior Classic on Friday and Saturday. Belvidere North 2, Dyer County 1 The Choctaws lost their first game since the opening game of the season on Friday in the first game in Murfreesboro despite holding Belvidere North to just two hits over the seven-inning setback. Belvidere got on the board in the top of the second inning as Norgard walked then scored on an error later in the inning to take a 1-0 lead after an inning and a half. Dyer County pulled even in the bottom of the next inning. Kierstyn Ray singled with two outs then scored on Katie Beth Caldwell’s single to tie the game at 1-1 after three innings.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Though the Lady Trojans took a lead into the top of the seventh on Thursday, Dyersburg needed a late rally after Dresden battled back to tie it in the top of the final inning before taking a 5-4 win at Doug French Field following a Mallory McCaslin single to drive in the game-winning run. Dresden got on the board first on Thursday, getting an RBI single from Gracie Adams to take a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Dyersburg answered with a pair of runs of its on in the bottom of the frame. Chelby Jordan and Izzie Odom each reached on errors before a Lily Kate Jones single loaded the bases. Two batters later, Addie Gatlin reached on an error to send across a run and tie the game. McCaslin singled in another to put the Lady Trojans on top 2-1 after one inning. Dyersburg State falls to Walters in Thursday doubleheader

  Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports With two games originally being scheduled for Saturday moved up two days due to incoming weather, Dyersburg State dropped a pair of games to visiting Walters State on Thursday afternoon. Walters State 8, Dyersburg State 1 Dyersburg State was able to keep things close early but a six-run seventh inning sealed the win in the opener for Walters State. In the top of the third, Walters State shortstop and Dyer County High School product Kole Fenton singled with two out then scored on an error later in the inning to put Walters State up 1-0 after two and a half innings. Walters State picked up another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Conner to take a 2-0 lead. The Eagles got that run back in the bottom of the sixth. Holden Warmth singled then scored as Walters State turned a double play later in the inning to cut the visitor’s lead to 2-1 after six innings.   The Three Oaks Choctaws continued their unbeaten streak to start the season, moving to 12-0 on the year with a 10-1 win over Lake County on Thursday evening. The Choctaws got on the board in the bottom of the first, getting a Landon Todd single and a Cullen Messer double before a groundout by Braxton Anderson plated the first run of the ball game. Grayson Daniels added an RBI single to put the Choctaws up 2-0 after one inning. Lake County cut the Choctaws lead in half in the top of the third with a Harrison homer to left to out the Falcons on the board as the green and gold trailed 2-1 after two and a half innings. Three Oaks answered in its half of the third. A Maddox Davis single to lead off the frame was followed two batters later by an Anderson double to score a run. Northview remains unbeaten with win over Lake County

  Northview moved to 7-0 on the season, scoring in double figures for the second time in four days to take an 11-1 win over Lake County on Thursday in Newbern. Lake County got the scoring started in the top of the first as Stewart was hit by a pitch then scored on a Chism groundout to put the Lady Falcons on top 1-0 after a half inning. Northview answered with a pair of runs in the Lady Choctaw half of the first. Kate Benedetto doubled then scored on a passed ball to tie the game. Emily Hall singled with one out and scored on a Berkley Childress groundout to give Northview a 2-1 lead after one inning. The Lady Choctaws added to their lead in the bottom of the second frame. Ellie Permenter and Lilly Tucker both drew walks to open the inning. Permenter scored moments later on an error then Benedetto reached on an error which scored a run to put Northview on top 4-1 after two frames. Lake County scores a ton in win at Fulton County

The Lady Falcons picked up their second win of the season on Thursday, traveling into Kentucky and returning from Fulton County with a 22-5 win over the Lady Pilots. Lake County had a pair of big innings to set the tone for the win. After being walked to lead off the game, Mariah Valentine scored by stealing home to put the Lady Falcons on top 1-0. Caron Johnson, who had singled, also stole home to double the Lake County lead. Kensi Hays doubled in a run then scored later in the inning on a Kylie Walley single to extend the Lady Falcon lead to four. Aaliyah Shell drew a bases-loaded walk to score a run then Valentine tripled after two runs scored during her at bat. Johnson then singled in a run before stealing home again later in the inning to put Lake County on top 9-0. After the Lady Pilots were able to cut into the lead with a trio of runs, Lake County went back to work on offense in the top of the second inning.   Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports The Choctaw softball team continued a busy week on the diamond on Thursday, picking up their third win in four days with an 11-1 win over visiting Lexington in five innings at Dyer County High School. The orange and white had a big bottom of the first inning, getting on the board early to set the tone. Kierstyn Ray led off the frame with a double then scored on a Katie Beth Caldwell single to put Dyer County on top 1-0. Emma Wray doubled in a run then scored on a Rylee Key single. The Choctaws added another run on a Rylee White sacrifice fly to go up 4-0 after one inning. Following a 1-2-3 top of the second, the Choctaws went back to work on offense in the bottom of the frame. Abbie Gibbons led off with a single then scored on a Ray single.
