Lady Eagles walk it off to avoid sweep

The Lady Eagles bounced back from a 4-1 loss in the opening game of the day to battle back from a tough break in the top of the seventh with a 5-4 walk-off win over Volunteer State at Dyersburg State on Friday evening to avoid the doubleheader sweep.

Dyersburg State took a 4-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning and looked ready to close out Vol State by getting a grounder for an out to open the inning. But, Carden drew a walk then Harrison doubled. Fuqua followed with a single to load the bases.


DSCC pitcher Emmie Bullington got a grounder back to herself and threw home for the force out for the second out of the frame. But, a liner to right was misplayed by Lady Eagle Allie Shires who lost her footing which resulted in a bases clearing triple – initially. The throw home stopped Kirby from advancing home but a throwing error by Dyersburg State catcher Keaton Wheeler allowed her to score and tie the game at 4-4. Bullington struck out the next batter to get out of the inning without any further damage.

In the bottom of the seventh, Carson McReynolds singled with one out then moved to second on an Madyson Morton sacrifice bunt. Macy Calhoun was inserted to run for Morton. With two out and a 1-1 count, Mallory Velotta singled to right to score Calhoun and give the Lady Eagles the win.

The Lady Eagles picked up their first two runs in the bottom of the first. Velotta reached on an error then score on Chloe Jones single to put Dyersburg State on the board. Later in the inning, Bullington helped her own cause with an RBI double to make it a 2-0 game in the Lady Eagles’ favor after one inning.

Two innings later, the Lady Eagles padded their lead. Jones got things going with a one-out doubled then scored when Madyson Lanier doubled her in to push the Dyersburg State lead to three runs. Lanier scored later in the inning to give the Lady Eagles a 4-0 lead after three innings.

Jones and Bullington lead the way for the Lady Eagles with a double and a single each in the win.

Bullington earned the win in the circle, allowing four runs (three earned) in eight hits with two strikeouts.

Dyersburg State returns to action Wednesday when the Lady Eagles travel to Southwest TN for doubleheader action beginning at noon.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
