With two games originally being scheduled for Saturday moved
up two days due to incoming weather, Dyersburg State dropped a pair of games to
visiting Walters State on Thursday afternoon.
Walters State 8, Dyersburg State 1
Dyersburg State was able to keep things close early but a
six-run seventh inning sealed the win in the opener for Walters State.
In the top of the third, Walters State shortstop and Dyer County High School product Kole Fenton singled with two out then scored on an error later in the inning to put Walters State up 1-0 after two and a half innings.
Walters State picked up another run in the fifth on an RBI
single by Conner to take a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles got that run back in the bottom of the sixth.
Holden Warmth singled then scored as Walters State turned a double play later
in the inning to cut the visitor’s lead to 2-1 after six innings.
Walters State, though, erupted in the top of the seventh with
six runs to take an 8-1 lead into the bottom of the frame. While Logan Cooke
doubled to lead off the frame and Jake Santos singled with two outs, a flyball
to right ended the Dyersburg State threat and sealed the win for Walters State.
Dyersburg State scattered four hits among four different players
with Cooke’s double being the lone extra-base hit.
Walters State 8, Dyersburg State 0
Walters State scored in five of the seven innings they batted
on the way to scoring eight for the second straight game to get the
doubleheader sweep.
Walters scored two in the first then lone runs in the fourth
and fifth before scoring a pair in each of the sixth and seventh innings on the
way to the win.
Dyersburg State got runners on in five of the first six
innings but failed to get a run across. With two outs in the seventh, Wyatt Kuhn
walked and Justin Dukes singled to give the Eagles two runners on for the only
time in the game. But, a strikeout ended the threat and sealed Walters State’s
win and the doubleheader sweep.
Cooke had a pair of singles to lead the way for the Eagles at the plate.
Dyersburg State closes out its series with Walters State on
Friday with a nine-inning game beginning at 11 a.m.
