Lake County boys avenge loss to Liberty; girls win second in a row

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Lake County’s boys ended their three-game week on a positive note, winning their second game in less than 24 hours. But, it took a strong effort down the stretch as the Falcons had to fend off a surging Liberty Tech team before claiming a 60-58 win on Saturday in Tiptonville. The Falcons trailed by two going into the second half after a late bucket by Liberty before the half. Lake County opened the third quarter as Jay Ricks and J’braylon Mays got early buckets. Liberty stayed close and answered four points from Falcon Jax Poole moments later with a quick 5-0 run to cut the Lake County lead to 35-34 with 4:53 left in the frame. The green and gold played stronger down the stretch, getting a three-pointer from Mays with just under two minutes left in the frame to go along with a bucket by Ricks to take a 44-39 lead into the final frame. Both teams traded buckets back and forth through the first half of the final frame allowin...

Trojans hold off Crockett, pull away late for homecoming win

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Though the Cavaliers were able to cut into a Dyersburg lead during the fourth quarter of Friday’s District 13-3A opener in the Terry Glover Gymnasium, the Trojans silenced the Crockett County momentum with a late run to seal the 57-47 win to open the district slate with a victory to celebrate Homecoming 2026. The Trojans came out of the locker room for the second half with a two-point lead. Over the course of the first eight minutes of the second half, the black and gold benefitted from a three-pointer and a jumper by Demonte Johnson as well as four points by Jace Ward to double their lead and headed into the fourth quarter with a 43-39 lead. The Cavaliers battled back during the midway through the final frame, cutting Dyersburg’s lead back to three points at 45-42. But, the Trojans responded with a bucket from Isaiah Thomas to spark what turned into a 12-3 run capped by a Ward bucket with about 30 seconds left to seal Dyersb...

Turn the Page The two-point loss to Illinois in the Music City Bowl was, in many ways, a repeat performance of the regular season for Tennessee. The big difference in this game was that the offense stalled and spun its wheels just as much as the defense. The Vols' offensive attack could muster only 278 yards in the game. The blocking front did a poor job of protecting the quarterback. Aguilar was under constant pressure from a team that was without its best pass rusher. Aguilar was sacked four times and the Illini forced a fumble that was recovered in the endzone for a cheap touchdown. On that play three guys poured through the protection and grabbed the UT quarterback before he had time to make a decision. When Vol kicker Max Gilbert missed a 39-yard chip shot, the thoughts of the failed kick that might have won the Georgia game flooded the memories of many Vol fans. Obviously the missed field goal could have been the difference in the game, but of course, we will never know for...

Choctaws rally to escape Lake County upset bid

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports With district play approaching for both schools at the end of the week, Dyer County’s boys were able to overcome an 11-point deficit going into the final frame to take a 70-68 win on Tuesday night in Tiptonville against Lake County. Lake County was able to turn a six-point lead into a double-figure advantage by the end of the third quarter thanks in part to seven points from Jay Ricks. Five points each by Aikee Ward and J’Braylon Mays helped the Falcons take a 57-46 lead over the Choctaws heading into the final frame. While the Choctaw defense held Lake County to just five points in the first six minutes of the final frame, Dyer County was able to climb back into the game. The Choctaw rally was aided by a pair of Devin Hayward free throws to put the orange and white on top 62-61 with 2:19 left in the game. A Clay Dodds bucket moments later extended the Dyer County lead to three points. The Choctaws got a pair of Grant West free thr...

Lady Trojans roll past Ripley, Tigers top Dyersburg boys

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports For only the third time this season, both Dyersburg basketball teams were in the same place on the same night as the Lady Trojans and Trojans got the 2026 portion of their schedule started as the two hosted Ripley on Saturday night in the Terry Glover Gymnasium. Dyersburg’s girls picked up their sixth win in a row, dominating Ripley from start to finish on Saturday night for a 58-29 win over the Lady Tigers. Led by a nine-point opening frame by Aerie Quinn as well as four-point efforts from Chelby Jordan and K’Laya Currie, Dyersburg took a 21-6 lead after one frame. The Lady Trojans continued to add to their lead in the second quarter. While the defense held Ripley to just five points in the final eight minutes of the first half, Dyersburg got a three-pointer and a jumper from Lily-Kate Jones to lead the way for the black and gold to take a 43-11 lead at the half. During halftime, the Lady Trojans honored 2025 Dyersburg gra...

Lake County falls as Central takes double-digit sweep

Image
Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Lake County had a tough go of it during its return to action on Friday night at Troy in the first game of the 2026 portion of the green and gold’s schedule. The Falcons fell behind early and never really recovered before falling to Obion County Central 71-48. Earlier in the night, the Lady Falcons met a similar fate as the Lady Rebels took a 72-49 victory over the Lake County girls. Obion County Central boys 71, Lake County 48 The Rebels never trailed after jumping out to an early lead on the way to a 23-point win over the Falcons. Despite five points from Jax Poole and a three-pointer from Xander Hertel, the Rebels set the tone early and took a 19-12 lead after one quarter. The Lake County defense still struggled to hold the Rebels in check as Central added 17 points to its side of the board in the final eight minutes of the first half. The Falcons were nearly able to duplicate their first-quarter point total thanks in...

The Real Season The Tennessee basketball squads have completed the preliminary portions of the schedules and now it is time to get down to business in the Southeastern Conference. Both teams enter league play off mixed reviews from the early going but both are still ranked in the top 25 in the national polls as they gear up for the "real" season. For Coach Kim Caldwell and the Lady Vols, the search for the right combinations of players is still an ongoing process. That is what often happens when your team is relying on freshmen to step up and deliver solid performances against the opposition. Yes, the team has some veterans sprinkled in and those players will be major components in the early going in the SEC. Three experienced players, Janiah Barker, a 6-4 forward who transferred from UCLA, leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.6 points per game. Combo guards Talaysia Cooper and Nya Robertson, like to launch the three-point shots. Cooper is a senior who transferred last y...
