Jason Peevyhouse Editor, JP Productions Sports Two weeks after the 2025 TSSAA Softball season concluded in Murfreesboro, Dyer County’s Rylee Key has brought home another postseason honor as the junior was named to the Tennessee Softball Coaches Association Class 3A All-State Team for her efforts on the field this season. “She works hard, on the field, on the court, in the weightroom, classroom…. you name it,” Dyer County Head Coach Shanna O’Bright said. “She had a great year at the plate and on the mound. Helped us out in many different ways. “She was also All-District Player of Year in a very tough district with a ton of talent. Well deserved.” At the plate, Key batted .419 with six home runs and 47 RBI. She collected 57 hits during the season. In the circle, Key had a 2.207 ERA in 92 innings pitched.   At This Writing The Tennessee Diamond Vols were still in the hunt to advance. The softball squad squeezed out a nine-inning victory over UCLA when senior shortstop Laura Mealer blistered a single to left field with the bases loaded to send the Bruins packing. Mealer, the transfer from Middle Tennessee in her second season with Tennessee, has been on fire for the entire post season. She has had 16 hits in 28 times at bat and that figures to an average of .571. Ironically, the bases were loaded because the UCLA head coach elected to intentionally Sophia Nugent and McKenna Gibson prior to Mealer's game winning smash to left field. The only answer must be that the Bruins feared the home run ball off the bats of Nugent or Gibson. Pitching ace Karlyn Pickens battled back from a two-run homer that tied the game in the top of the seventh to slam the door and get out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the ninth. Pickens threw 142 pitches in this game and survived turning her ankle in the...

Football Recruiting Heat Up Last week the Tennessee football staff and support groups entertained over 20 prospects at the annual 865 event in Knoxville. While high school recruiting seems to have been forced out of the headlines by the NIL and transfer portal news, it is still important to Coach Josh Heupel that the Volunteers continue to bring in young, fresh talent to the program each year. The group that arrived on Rocky Top was headlined by quarterback commitment Faizon Brandon who wanted to be in town to assist Vol recruiters with securing addition verbals from some of the talent on had. Brandon (6-3.5, 195, 4.5) will be a senior this fall at Grimsley H.S. in Greensboro, North Carolina. He has been rated the No. 1 overall prospect in the country by  247.com  and Rivals lists him as the No. 1 quarterback recruit and No. 2 overall prospect in the nation. He is also a five star rated player and the No. 3 quarterback on the ESPNU charts. Brandon is a very talented ath...
