Coming off only
their second loss to a District 13-3A team in the past two seasons,
the Lady Trojans got their week off to a good start on Tuesday night
at home, defeating rival Dyer County 72-46 in the Terry Glover
Gymnasium.
Dyersburg Head Coach Tim Strayhorn said the team’s start to the night was the key to victory.
“We came out ready to play,” Strayhorn explained. “In the last four or five games, we came out in the first quarter not ready. That’ coaching, not players.
“We, as a coaching staff have got to do a better job getting them ready to play all four quarters.”
Dyer County Head Coach Derek McCord said this is the youngest team he has had.
“I am very proud of our effort,” McCord said. “We played really hard. I thought we had a decent job guarding Joya Crawford.
“I had a freshman (Ava Pearson) on her and I thought she did a good job.”
Behind buckets from Lady Trojans Joya Crawford and Chelby Jordan as well as a three-pointer from Aerie Quinn, Dyersburg jumped out to a 13-4 lead during the opening frame. But, a pair of Anitra Honore buckets as well as a couple of charges on the defensive end for the Lady Choctaws helped Dyer County cut the DHS lead to 13-8. Zya Currie added a three-pointer later in the frame to keep the orange and white within striking distance before a three-pointer from Crawford as well a buckets from Lewis and Chelby Jordan put Dyersburg up 24-11 after one quarter,
The Lady Trojans
were able to keep a comfortable lead through much of the second
quarter after early buckets by Jordan pushed the Dyersburg advantage
to 17 points. Dyer County battled back, getting a putback from Honore
and a bucket by Alijah Robinson to cut the lead back to 28-15 midway
through the stanza. But, buckets from Quinn, Jordan and Lewis helped
Dyersburg take a 41-25 lead at the half.
Dyersburg began to pull away in the third quarter as a balanced attack led by a three-pointer from Crawford as well as buckets from Quinn, Jordan and Maclin countered a pair of short jumpers from Honore. The Lady Trojans went on a quick run later in the frame which helped Dyersburg take a 22-point lead before a late Molly Roberts bucket cut the black and gold lead to 58-38 heading into the final frame.
From there, the Lady Trojans cruised to the 26-point win with a strong fourth quarter.
Jordan led the way for the Lady Trojans with 25 points while Quinn added 16. Crawford tossed in 13 in the victory.
“She played well on both sides of the floor tonight,” Strayhorn said of Jordan. “She made a bunch of good shots. She’s just a complete basketball player.“It was a great team effort tonight but we’ve still got a lot to work on.”
McCord said his team has got to do a better job at the basket.
“We’ve got to make all the layups,” the Dyer County head coach said. “In the first half, we missed two or three layups and run outs that we’ve got to make.”
Honore paced Dyer County with 23 of the team's 46 points.
“She was really good tonight and we don’t get her the ball enough,” McCord added.
Dyersburg returns to action on Friday when the Lady Trojans take on South Gibson in Medina while the Lady Choctaws travel to Troy to face Obion County Central. Tip off for both games is set for 6 p.m.
