Dyersburg girls clinch District 13-3A with impressive win over South Gibson

The District 13-3A title was on the line Tuesday night in the Terry Glover Gymnasium as the Lady Trojans took a halftime lead then went for and got the knockout blow, holding the South Gibson girls to just seven second-half points on the way to a 44-23 win over the Lady Hornets.

Despite a pair of buckets from Joya Crawford as well as a three-pointer by Chelby Jordan, the Lady Hornets were able to take a 10-9 lead over the Lady Trojans after quarter.

With the game still a low-scoring affair, the Lady Trojan defense held the Lady Hornets to just six points in the second quarter. In the meantime, a five-point frame by Crawford along with a three-pointer from Kay Kay Strayhorn and a bucket by Kalli Maclin helped Dyersburg take a 20-16 lead at the half.

The Lady Trojans expanded on that lead in the third quarter. While holding the Lady Hornets to just seven points in the third frame, Dyersburg got three buckets and a trey from Crawford to go along with deuces from Jordan and Maclin to extend the black and gold’s lead to 33-23 heading into the final frame.

From there, the Dyersburg defense was smothering, shutting out South Gibson for the final eight minutes of action. Meanwhile, two three-pointers from Crawford and five points by Jordan sealed the win and the team’s second straight regular season District 13-3A title.

Crawford led the way for Dyersburg with 24 points while Jordan added 10 in the win.

The Lady Trojans’ win wrapped up the regular season for Dyersburg as the black and gold girls will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s District 13-3A Tournament at Dyer County High School. The Lady Trojans will play on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and will face the winner of Tuesday’s game between No. 4 Dyer County and No. 5 Obion County Central.,
