Lady Choctaws survive OT thriller against Central girls

Just when it looked darkest for the Lady Choctaws with a Central player at the line with two free throws and a one-point lead for the orange and white, Dyer County caught a break with a missed free throw which kept the game tied to force an overtime frame which the Lady Choctaws dominated to take a 57-49 win over the Lady Rebels.

The end of the fourth frame wasn't even the first time during the final eight minutes of regulation in which the Lady Choctaw season looked in doubt. The Lady Rebels outscored Dyer County 7-4 to start the final quarter of regulation and took a five-point lead with a pair of Emeri Lee free throws with 41 seconds left.

Dyer County got a big free throw from Tykeria Kennedy to cut the lead down to two. After a turnover by the Lady Rebels following a timeout on the ensuing inbounds play, freshman Julie Cogdill hit her biggest three-pointer of the year, putting Dyer County up 49-48 with just under 30 seconds left.

But, with time winding down in the final frame following a Dyer County stop on defense, Lady Rebel Hannah Taylor picked off a long pass then drew a foul on the same motion by Zya Currie to go to the line less than a second left. Taylor hit the first attempt but missed the second, sending the game to overtime.

Given new life, Dyer County dominated the extra frame, getting four points from Anitra Honore and a bucket by Alijah Robinson as well as two late free throws from Currie. The Lady Choctaw defense held the Lady Rebels scoreless to seal the win and advance to Friday night's District 13-3A Semifinal against top-seeded Dyersburg.

After an early Zya Currie bucket, the Lady Rebels answered with an 8-0 run to take a six-point lead. The Lady Choctaws battled back, getting a pair of Marley Morgan free throws to spark a 10-3 run which saw Tykeria Kennedy score four points including a three-pointer to take a 12-11 lead. Central got a Katy Frazier three-pointer to retake the lead but Anitra Honore got a putback as the clock ran out to tie the game at 14-14 after one.

An early Kennedy trey put Dyer County on top again but Central rallied with a 7-0 run to take a 21-17 advantage with 4:30 left in the half. A Julie Cogdill three-pointer cut the Central lead to one then a Morgan free throw tied the game with 3:27 left in the second frame, Central's Hannah Taylor put the Lady Rebels on top with a three-pointer but a free throw from Cogdill and a late trey from Currie put Dyersburg back on top 25-24 heading into the half.


A three-pointer from Frazier early in the third quarter gave the lead back to Central but Dyer County followed with a 10-2 run capped by a Currie three-pointer to go up 35-29 with 4:51 left in the frame. But, from there, the Lady Rebels outscored Dyer County 12-4 throughout the rest of the frame to take a 41-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

Kennedy led the way for the Lady Choctaws with 14 points while Honore and Currie each scored 10 in the win.

Dyer County will face Dyersburg at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in the District 13-3A Semifinals.

The Dyersburg Activity Center and the Dyersburg Diamond Youth Baseball league will be working together to host three tournaments this fall with Grand Slam Baseball.
