Despite having a seven-point lead heading into the final quarter, the Dyersburg Lady Trojans had to battle for their second straight District 13-3A Championship as South Gibson rallied but fell after a late free throw secured the black and gold’s second straight title via a 32-31 win over the Lady Hornets in the district title game in Newbern on Wednesday night.

Dyersburg took its biggest lead of the night early in the fourth quarter on a Joya Crawford jumper to go up 31-22 with 7:44 left in the game. South Gibson got hot one last time, getting a three-point play from Faith Reed as part of an 8-0 run to cut the Dyersburg lead to one after a late bucket. The Lady Trojans got a free throw from Crawford to push their lead back to two. Dyersburg looked to have caught a break on a traveling call with 36 seconds left. But, the ensuing inbounds sailed just too far and gave the ball back to South Gibson with 35 seconds left.

South Gibson was able to run down the clock looking for a shot and got one with a drive to the rim by Jade Reed, who also drew the foul on the missed shot. With two seconds left, the first free throw was good but the second missed and Dyersburg grabbed the rebound to secure the district title.

A back-and-forth opening quarter saw buckets from Chelby Jordan and Aerie Quinn put the Lady Trojans on top early but South Gibson rallied to tie the game at 7-7 moments later. Dyersburg answered a bucket from Jordan and two free throws by Joya Crawford to take a four-point lead. The Lady Hornets had the last say in the opening quarter, going on a 5-0 run to take a 12-11 lead at the end of the first frame.

In a very low-scoring second frame, Dyersburg was the first to get on the board with a Jordan bucket with 4:35 left in the half to retake the lead. The game went scoreless for almost three more minutes before a Crawford three-pointer put the Lady Trojans on top by four with 1:37 left. South Gibson got a late jumper in the lane to cut the Dyersburg lead to 16-14 at the half.

The Lady Hornets tied the game early in the second half then answered a Jordan three-pointer with a pair of Reed buckets to take a 20-19 lead. But, back-to-back buckets from Crawford sparked 10-2 by the Lady Trojans which was ended by a late free throw from the senior Miss Basketball finalist to give the black and gold a 29-22 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Crawford led the way for Dyersburg with 16 points while Jordan added 12.

Dyersburg will host Bolton on Friday night in the first round of the Region 7-3A Tournament in the Terry Glover Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
