Lady Trojans top Haywood in sectional semifinals

The DMS Lady Trojans got a strong defensive performance in the second quarter to take a lead at the half but still had to fight off a scrappy Haywood team before claiming a 38-30 win over the Lady Tomcats in the semifinals of the TMSAA Class AA Section 3 Tournament at Dyersburg Middle School on Monday night.


The two teams played to a 6-6 tie after the opening quarter then the DMS defense stifled the Lady Tomcats. Lady Trojan defenders held Haywood to just a pair of free throws in the final six minutes of the first half. Meanwhile, the DMS girls got a pair of buckets from TJ Jones as well as individual scores by Tinley Newsom, Omari Dubose and Desleign Strayhorn to take a 16-8 lead at the half.

Haywood’s offense came out stronger in the third quarter, getting eight points from Leniya Jones as part of a nine-point frame by the Lady Tomcats. DMS matched them point-for-point, getting a seven-point performance by Strayhorn to help the Lady Trojans take a 25-17 lead into the final six minutes.


Haywood had one last surge in them, cutting the Lady Trojan lead in half late in the final quarter. But, a layup from Katherine Rogers pushed the lead to six points with 1:20 left in the game. Following a pair of Lady Tomcat free throws to answer, the Lady Trojans got a free throw and a layup by TJ Jones to go up six then a pair of Strayhorn free throws to seal it late and secure their spot in the championship game on Thursday night.

Strayhorn led the way for the Lady Trojans with 22 points while Jones added 10 in the win.

DMS will take on North Parkway, who defeated Paris Inman in the other semifinal, on Thursday night at 6 p.m. in the TMSAA Class AA Girls Section 3 Tournament Championship Game.

Trojans headed to Region 7-3A Championship for the first time in 21 years

  Jason Peevyhouse JP Productions Sports Thanks to a stellar second half which saw the Trojans outscore Haywood 45-23, the Dyersburg boys will play for a region championship for the first time since 2004 after the black and gold’s 68-55 win over the Tomcats on Tuesday night in Newbern. "I think our kids were extremely engaged from the tip," Dyersburg Head Coach Blaine Mahaffey said. "I thought we rebounded well all night.  "And then, in the second half, when we were able to play a little bit better offensively, I think it showed up more." Trailing by nine at the break, the Trojans cut it to eight early in the second half but a three-pointer from Haywood put the Tomcats back up 35-24 with just over seven minutes left in the frame.
