The Falcons were in control early during the District 14-1A Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday evening in Dresden, but a strong second half by Greenfield led to a season-ending 68-64 loss by Lake County.

Greenfield got on the board first with an early bucket but the Falcons answer back with layups by Cade Lanier and a pair of three-pointer by Aikee Ward to bookend a 10-2 run by Lake County. Greenfield rallied to answer and cut the Falcon lead to two after an Easton Sullivan bucket. Lake County answered with a Jataveion Ricks bucket and a Ka’Devon Gross free throw as well as a Xander Hertel three-pointer to build a 20-12 lead after one frame by the Falcons.

A three-pointer and a three-point play by J’Braylon Mays answered some early second-quarter scoring by the Yellowjackets and pushed the Falcons lead to nine. A three-pointer by Ward moments later answered a pair of Greenfield free throws by Brady Archie and put Lake County up 29-19 with just under five minutes left in the first half. Moments later, following a three-point play by Gross and a three-pointer by Hertel extended the Lake County lead to 13. But, Greenfield battled back down the stretch in the half to cut the Falcons’ lead to 39-28 at the break.

Greenfield’s defense made adjustments at the half and held Lake County to a Gross bucket and a Lanier jumper early in the second half. In the meantime, Greenfield cut the Falcon lead to six before Lanier’s two-pointer then went on a 16-0 run through the third quarter to take a six-point lead. A late Hertel trey cut the Greenfield advantage in half as Lake County trailed 51-48 heading into the fourth quarter.

A Ricks free throw and a Hertel layup tied the game early in the fourth quarter to give Lake County a brief bit of momentum. But, Greenfield stormed back again, going on an 11-2 run through much of the final minutes to build a nine-point lead. Lake County kept battling, getting a Ward three-pointer to cut the deficit to six then answered a Greenfield free throw with another Ward trey. The Falcons continued to battle and cut the Yellowjacket lead to three late with a Hertel trey. But a late Greenfield free throw by Easton Sullivan sealed the Yellowjacket win.

Ward led the way for the Falcons with 17 points while Hertel added 16. Gross tossed in 10 in the loss.
