A strong second-half performance by the Hornets on Tuesday night in the Terry Glover Gymnasium doomed the Trojans on Senior Night as the Dyersburg boys fell 52-40 in District 13-3A action.
In a low-scoring first quarter, three-pointers from Justin Sawyer and Jeff Cobb highlighted the Dyersburg scoring as the Trojans trailed 12-8 after one quarter.
The Trojans picked up their scoring in the second quarter, getting a bucket and a three-pointer from Jace Ward as well as four points by Breyden Turnage. But, the Hornets matched them point-for-point to take a 23-19 lead into the locker room at the half.
Turnage paced Dyersburg with four in another low-scoring quarter which saw the Hornets also struggle to score while extending their lead to 36-28 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Trojans got four points in the fourth quarter each from Cobb, Marcus Wharton and Turnage for Dyersburg’s most productive frame of the game. But, South Gibson held off the Trojans to get the district win.
Turnage led the way for the Trojans with 12 in the loss while Cobb added nine in the regular season finale.
Dyersburg awaits the start of the District 13-3A Tournament which is set to begin at Dyer County High School next week.
